So my son and I swapped the timing chain on his truck this weekend. we also changed the head/oil pan/valve cover gaskets, oil/water pumps.

Set crank to tdc and I thought I did the same for the cam, now I am not sure. so when we finally started the truck, we hear a knocking sound from under the valve cover. I am thinking the cam is off? what else could it be? is there a quick way to check? Truck runs for a couple of seconds then dies, which might be a good thing at this point.

Thanks in advance,
Luis

Not much to it really: cam gear dimples set at 12 o'clock... crank set at 6.. shinny chain links aligned with dimples..all slack removed from driver side, passenger side gets the slack; install tensioner.. Lot of controversy on these engines on whether or not they are interference, but my experience has been they are...

That is how I set it up...

Might your distributor be 180 degrees off?

Crank was off by one turn. No more knocking. I just need to figure out why it only run for about 5 secs then dies.

Haven't been on the forum for a while... Did you get it running yet? With the engine running for only a few seconds, one possibility is a very large vacuum leak

Bobby,

It is running but not too good. Going to pull engine again since it has a big oil leak too.

Eeeks. Let me know when you get it back in or if you need any help. Best to reach me through email seeing that my forum usage is pretty lame. I'm trying to get on here more often :)
