84 mini 4x4 with a 1993 22R and the 84 head/manifold/carb.

What I am seeing is the temp gauge is turned off when the truck is off. As soon as I turn the key, the needle pops up to about midway on the scale and stays there regardless of whether the truck is cold, warm, moving, etc, no matter how long I am driving.

I am, of course, concerned that I don't really know what the engine temp is doing, so I wouldn't be warned should there be a problem.

Could this be the wrong sensor? Are there multiple sensors on the truck for either year? What else could be going on? What's the best way to troubleshoot?

Thanks!

I had a similar problem and it was a faulty sensor. But my guage would immediatley go all the way to the top.
Ground out the sensor wire and guage should not move, disconnect it and it should go all the way up. ( or vise versa)
Repair manuals give a tolerance number for an Ohms test which can be done with a cheap electrical tester.

Thanks. I went and looked at the engine compartment tonight, and it looks like the PO did a fair amount of patchwork on the wiring between the sensors and the connectors, with crimp connectors and so forth. I think that's where I'll start. I'm trying to get ahold of an FSM for it.

oh,
crap. this is the only key i have.
i thot is was for the 22r. looks like its for a 22re.

Funny, it is labelled 22R, but it certainly has EFI all over it.

Thanks, I'll look at it tonight. I know there's some kind of temp sensor in that vicinity (63), but I'll have to see if it's the same.

Howdy! I thought that the EFI on the 22r first becaome available as an option in 85. Problem could be mixing up EFI senders and gauges with non-EFI parts. After my first engine swap, the temp showed the needle on HOT when it started, and then showed cooler and cooler as the engine warmed up!! John

I wondered about this, too. In fact, even though the truck is 4/84, after looking at the figures in my Haynes manual it is clear the vacuum hose and crap matches their 1985 illustration, not the 84. Maybe that means it was a CA truck, or maybe I have a real mutt in there.

That's funny, my dad has 2 84 4x4s and they both have "83" emmissions...

a sensor can send a hot signal when its cold. why? a air pocket in the coolant system.

have you verified proper coolant circulation, and removed alll air?

I haven't burped the system. But it isn't hot or cold, just right in the middle. The needle pops from the off setting (cold) to the middle within 5 seconds of starting the engine (when it's 30 degrees F, or whatever). Then it stays there until I shut the engine off, no matter what.

FWIW I guess I'll burp the system just to see.

Well, burped the system (replacing the alternator) and fixed the cruddy wire to the temp sensor. Temp still goes up to the midrange of the gauge right away, but instead of popping up, like it did, it floats up like normal. But before the radiator fluid is warmed up. I wonder if it has the wrong sensor/gauge combo.

That's kinda what I thought.

Doh!

Talking to CDan about getting a new sender. He had me pull the plug on the one in there, and turn on the ignition. The gauge needle went right up to where it's been going. Guess I have a ground issue. :o
