Only seen one 21R in my life. My cousin put a used Japanese crate motor off the pier in his POS 82 pick up.
The R motor is NOT an upgrade by any means.
These Brick-like vehicles need torque.

Howdy! That would only be an upgrade if you are currently running a lawnmower engine. Check the torque and HP ratings. John

im driving a 22re in a 4runner, and it would be the last motor i would put in a J4 !!
my BJ42 has a lot more grunt

As stated above, 21R is a non usa market engine of about 1800 CC.. I looked at an 83 mini that had one swapped in...had very serious carb problem,s and after literally hours of searching, found that there are no carb kits available stateside, and I assume no other parts as well. While it will physically fit the space of a 22R, it's a turd. Pass.

Your FJ 40 should have an F motor or a 2F motor, depending on the year.
