I am looking to sell my 100 series and replace with a 16+ 200 due to all of the driving that we do. Would be nice to have something a little more modern to take on long trips and my wife daily drives it with our 5yr old and would be nice to have newer safety tech.

With that said are there really any big differences between 2016 - 2019 Land Cruisers? Looking through the FAQ/stick section it seems that in 2018 they got power folding mirrors, power lift gate and different transmission tuning. Is this the only major changes? I just dont want to purchase a 16 if there was some big change in 17 kind of how 100 series switched to a 5spd in 04 and vvti in 06.

I tried searching but didnt turn up that much and what I did find seemed to be more about the earlier trucks.

The 2018 changes were evolutionary as you listed, and some wiring changes once you get under the skin. Stuff like fuse blocks being laid out differently.

On top of those small features roughly the second half of 18 will have the updated radiator that doesn't crack around 100k miles. But frankly this issue wouldn't keep me away from an otherwise clean 16-18.. The new part is only about $400 from the discount sites and it's very easy to monitor the area for crack propagation, with people driving many thousands of miles from first spotting it until they got a chance to replace it.

2016-2017 models also suffer from deteriorating steering wheel trim and have mandatory rear seat entertainment systems. The front differential on some accounts was reportedly updated for 2020-2021 models as well.

The deteriorating steering wheel just gives you an excuse to order in a fully leather wrapped wheel from the factory :)

FYI .. The 2016 has power folding mirrors.

Later years it also got a tale gate dampener, I got the part but haven't installed it yet.
Some vehicles came with the remote start option, also a part you can buy but it's better to just add an alarm with remote start.

The steering wheel issue is from 2016 thru 2019. It was $150 to fix it.

Later years got the Newer improved radiator. This is important. There is a thread on this. Rad is about $800. If you get a 2016 carefully inspect the rad and water pump for coolant leaks.

For LC:

2020+: new front differential design…maybe better/stronger differential carrier??

2018+: KDSS bolt change, automatically power-folding outside mirrors, late-2018s have new radiator design, late-2018s have capacitive touch screen on center display, powered lift gate, non-mandatory rear entertainment, newer transmission software (flashable on 2016-2017), and new key (very cool) design.

2016+ LC also gains bigger front brakes, 8-speed auto, semi-aniline leather of the LX, and has better buttons arrangement than prior years.

Not bias at all……but I think 2019-2020 are best years. Before COVID and possible decline in quality. 1 year after 2018 changes (to make sure late-2018 changes are in effect). And 2020 gains new front diff…so that maybe the “golden” year??
