Are these transmissions so fragile to worry about end of life at 250k? In old Toyotas 300k was just something to look in the rearview mirror at.

Go take a look at the transmission situation in the GX460s. Some go out a lot earlier than 250k.

Yeah i think I am just going to have then put a trans in it due to mileage and I don't want to be chasing this issue going forward.
Often I’ve seen Toyota reman transmissions priced less than a used/salvage transmissions.

The Toyota “reman” transmissions are *essentially* brand new units aside from a few large components (trans case being one).

First your motor, and now the transmission? I'd have long moved on by now, but kudos for staying positive.
Yeah. Just before the motor replacement i had new globes and shocks replaced as well as new front control arms. Also had rack replaced when motor was getting done. At this point I figure if I get another 250k out of her it'd be worth replacing the trans

I gave the codes at the beginning of my post.
Is that good enough?
Yeah sorry I completely forgot they were in the first post.

P0761 is likely the relevant code. Solenoid S3 is stuck. That’s preventing you shifting past 4th gear, and also like triggering the other code. It’s possible it could be a cracked valve body too but the intermittent nature leads me to believe the solenoid, which is basically just an electronic relay that opens and closes to allow fluid to pass through, is failing.

I’m on my phone, not at a PC, but I can post the FSM pages for both codes later if you’d like.

All that said I’m not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet. If I was debating whether to try to repair or just keep driving it until I needed a transmission I would attempt the repair. I also make a lot of bad decisions in life, so take that advice for what you will.

Reman transmissions through Toyota are about $3k and include the torque converter. You’ll want to flush the lines to make sure there’s no old clutch material in them, plus ~12 quarts of fluid. There are a bunch of supposedly single use parts in the reinstall (like the exhaust bolts and gaskets), and if you have the transmission out and haven’t done your starter is highly recommend doing that as well since it has to come out anyway.

My bill was about $7k at Slee for parts and labor, including the starter. If my fluid hadn’t come out sparkly I would’ve tried for just a new solenoid. I also make a lot of bad decisions in life, so take that advice for what you will.

Thanks. I ordered the trans today. Good point on the starter, I had it replaced when the engine was replaced last winter. Thanks again for all the help

Cool. Sorry to hear about your trouble. Mine went at 175k. It’s disappointing how such a relatively small part seems to have an outsized impact on transmission reliability.

I will say in my case in hindsight I can now see how the solenoid was starting to act up, as I was sometimes getting a harsh, almost metallic, shift from 2-1, when coming to a somewhat fast stop. I had assumed it was a u-joint starting to wear or some driveline slop in my gears. If I ever started experiencing that again I’d probably proactively swap the affected solenoid.

A you get someone to fire up a copy of Techstream and read the codes? If the transmission ecu is attempting to shift but a solenoid is sticking that should show up as a stored code.

A failed solenoid will eventually burn up the transmission. But these transmissions can go 400-500k so unless you were already having issues with it slipping you really shouldn’t ignore what’s happening.

If you don’t want to spend $4500 (which is a deal… this is typically a $6k repair), have someone pull the code, post it here and we can use the FSM to diagnose which solenoid it is, then have them drop the pan and replace it. I think the solenoids are $300 or so. Add to that 4 quarts of ATF, a new pan gasket, and the labor and you’re probably in the $600-800 range, which is a fairly cheap repair. (While you’re in there, swap the transmission filter because it’s cheap and it’s right there).
What he said. I just did exactly that on a Lexus 8sp over a few beers last weekend in the garage. Its a messy job, but not complicated if you have a scan tool that also reads trans fluid temps.

Beautiful. Is that a remanufactured (84)? What else will you have replaced while u are in there? How many shop hours for the replacement?

Sure. I am used to it by now. Former toyota service advisor for 25 years before I found peace and harmony behind the scenes in the parts dept.
I gift to you: a portion of a cake doughnut from sales. And this Dr Pepper which is a low-calorie beverage due to how little is left in the bottle. Also, this Reese’s peanut butter cup that I stole from my son’s Halloween candy.
Now, please, order my parts you sonovabish.

It’s every GD week with this guy.

Update. Finally got my lx570 done with new toyota reman trans. Total bill 4700 with labor, parts and tax. (I work at a toyota dealer so even though this is a big nut to swallow it's better than having to pay full price). Of interest is the harness plug on the left side of the trans had trans fluid contamination in it (this connector is not serviceable unless you open up the trans and remove the rest of that connectors components.)
Not sure if that was causing my situation or just a notable observation. Anyway with 250k on the odometer and a "new" 45k mile engine install last year i decided to just replace the transmission. So far I feel like the shifts are smoother and possibly quicker. I cold started it today at work for the first time since the install and did not get the harsh bump feel when shifting it into drive from a fast idle like I was getting before. So all in all I am looking forward to another 250k from her. Time will tell.

Was the TC replaced, also?
