I'm looking to buy a used GX or LX in the next couple of weeks, and am wondering your thoughts on a 2009 GX KDSS with 150k ($15k) vs a 2003 LX with 140k ($10k). Both are in great shape with little rust.

The GX with KDSS is more fun on-road with the post-2006 engine, but I have always wanted a LX/LC and enjoyed the heck out of the LX test drive... it'll be a daily driver with weekend trips mountain biking, camping etc nothing too hardcore.

Also, should I be concerned with replacing the AHC if/when it goes? As in converting to coil springs.

Thanks for the help - I'm new to this and have learned a lot from the forum.

If you’ve always wanted the LC/LX, get it! I always end up with buyer’s remorse when I don’t get the thing that I really WANT (sort of a buy once cry once thing).

We were trying to make the same decision but WANTED the GX over the LC, so we got one. Now every time I see one I know we made the right choice.

Obviously there will be pros and cons to each, but they’re both great vehicles so you can’t make the wrong choice.

Key question for me - does GX have enough space for you? If it does and you do not mind barn door - I would choose GX. I have 07 (no KDSS) and it is fun to drive and grows on you. LX would be my preference for more space - you can actually use back row seats or take them out, ability to seat on the rear hatch is nice.
You can not go wrong with either vehicle - pick one which you really like and suits your needs.

That 2003 LX470 with 140k miles for $10k lookalike a good deal.

I was one of the few that had AHC fail at around 80k. It was expensive to fix, and it’s involved to remove it. There are threads here on how to do it, if you’re handy. And I’m not lol

I was in the same boat. Went with the GX. I love it, but I regret no going with a 100 Series every time I see one.

A couple things i would note, anyone correct me if im wrong since ive only owned an 80 and a GX not a 100. But doesnt the Gx get a little better gas mileage due to less weight and higher gearing? I “think” the 100 will have the 1st gen atrac while the gx will have the 2nd gen better version. The 100 will be heavier duty with bigger axles and able to carry a heavier load. Also in the long run the 100 will be probably hold its value and eventually go up in value due to its desirability and rarity. Although i think the same of the Gx. Its a tough decision, but if u only paid 10k for the 100 and had 5k left over for a build u could have one bad ass built up land cruiser for the price of a bone stock Gx. that would prolly tip me to one side.

Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up buying the LX and couldn't be happier. Brian894X4 your last point about having 5k to put into a build up is one big reason I ended up going that route.

Pictures to come.

In my experience, a built-up GX get noticed far more than a 100 or LX. People expect LX to be built up but not GXs, not yet anyway. But hey, being noticed isn't everybody's cup of tea.

Also, 5K isn't going to buy much beyond an suspension lift and maybe tires around here.

10k for the 2003 Lx with 140k miles is a very good deal. Wise choice. Do not worry about the AHC it can easily be replaced and no longer that expensive. I have a Gx and an Lx and both built. I prefer the Lx and a lot more

people I see on the road do too

I never got around to posting a picture, so here you go. The '03 LX made the trip down to Texas where I spent the summer (Padre Island shown here... great time camping on the beach but not a fan of the salt spay) and now back in Wisconsin getting ready for the winter. An absolute blast. So far my only changes have been throwing on some 33" BFG KO2's which sounded like the way to go and haven't disappointed.

Very nice. I live in Japan and see both all the time. I too was going back and forth between both those models. Prado and VX here. I settled on a Prado in May and tell myself all the time I still want a VX.
I enjoy the heck out of my Prado, but I know I’ll have the VX down the road most likely.
