I just returned from a mission trip to Honduras. (As a side note I go there with ARM, Auto Repair Ministries to repair cars, trucks, and motorcycles for native pastor and missionaries living in third world countries worldwide.) Back to the Cruisers....

I got to rebuild the front end on a friends 1983 HJ47. As if that wasn't cool enough, he took me to the local Toyota dealer to show me the one he wants to buy. It's a 2008 HJ78L. It is SWEEEEET! I have a lot more pics of it, and lots of cool Toy truck we never got here in the states. Enjoy the pics. If you want to see more, let me know. I'll have to post 3 at a time.

More pics of the new one

Looks like US Spec 80 axles to me, except for the leafs in he rear. They are available w/ the snorkel, the winch, and lockers, This one was ordered by someone working out in the jungle, but came in w/o lockers, so the buyer didn't want it.

More pics to come. I've got a video walk around of it too, not sure how to post that.

Even more pics

It's a diesel, 5 spd manual, vinyl interior, troop carrier, w/ a pintle hitch. How cool would it be to have here? We've all seen Non US spec 70 series, but I had never seen this front end. I kind of like it, but then again, I'm pretty much a sucker for all things Cruiser.

AWSOME!!:bounce:I always thought the 70's with the HZ diesel were the ultimum. To bad it can't legally make it's home in the States! :crybaby: Interesting that it has the 80 axles under it. Have heard that 105 series also run similar drive train.

In retrospec about the axles, it has the 5 x 150mm bolt pattern like the US Spec 100 series has, so it's not the same outers as the 6x5.5 as the 80 series. Guess the 5 x150mm is the new world std. Not sure if it is a full floater rear or not. Forgot to look at that.

Same bolt pattern as my 2006 HZJ79 series :D

Cheers,

toyotatruckjunkie, where in Honduras were you? I know sometimes folks with ARM come to Guatemala as well but I haven't seen them for a while. If you come by Guatemala make sure you say hi. You'd almost certainly come by the school where I work as it's the only MK school in the city.

They have full floating rear axles, you can tell from the pics. Here in Venezuela, all the 70 series imported from japan came with full floaters as well, my guess is that those 70s are japanese as well. The ones made here in Venezuela have dana 60 rear axles and are not full floating :frown: (and we're still using the "old" front fascia).

As for the lug pattern, here in Venezuela they switched from 6 lugs to 5 when they switched to coil overs for the front suspension in 2.002.

Cheers.

The change to a 5 stud lug pattern is to stop owners using the old 6 stud rims which have a different offset and would foul on the coil suspension according to Toyota Aust

Hi All:

"TTJ," great thread, thanks for sharing all these photos with us! :D

Thanks to all for the interest and kind words.

Sorry for the delay. I've been a little distracted with a visitor named Ike.

Cruiser_Guy; I went on the ARM trip to La Ceiba, Honduras. ARM goes to a couple of different locations in Guatemala, (as well as other places in Central America, Africa, etc.). One of the guys I was with on this trip usually goes to Paten (sp?). The other trip goes to Guatemala City, I believe. Not exactly sure when the next trip is going there. There is another trip coming up soon. If it's to your area, should I suggest they contact you?

Great organization to be involved with. To borrow the line from their brochure, "ARM's purpose is to repair, maintain, and replace vehicles for field missionaries and indigenous pastors worldwide through fund-raising and short-term missions teams." Started by a good friend of mine and his wife in Florida.

I went on the same trip back in 2005. I took so many pics of Cruisers, it was sad. I had everyone on the trip spotting them for me. There are SO many cool Toyota 4x4 models we never get here in the States. I was going to write a short article for Toyota Trails about the trip, but never made the time. I've seen similar articles run there. My friends there are fellow Cruiser-heads and depend on their HJ47 to take mission teams deep into the jungle. Maybe I'll sit down and write it up this time.

I guess the FF rear axle shows in the pics huh? Dooh. Glad others found it as cool as I do.

There was no "sticker price". I hesitate to mention the price he was quoted, in case my buddy has a real chance to buy it, but he could buy that one for less than an FJ Cruiser here, (low $30k.) Not sure of the price on the maroon PU. It had lockers.

When they come to Guatemala City they usually are here with a fellow I know who's kids go to the school here. They don't need to contact me, the locals are in MUCH greater need to have their vehicles fixed properly than I ever will be. I have friends in Honduras as well but mostly in Tegucigalpa though I've been through La Ceiba.

5x150mm

It is pretty much the standard on the heavier line for all toyota. 98+ 100, 105, 200, 78, 79 etc, 07+ tundra, 08+ sequoia.

As for the workhorses like 105, 78, 79 etc the 5on150 seems to coincide w/ 32 spline 9.5 full float.

Aus 70 series

These newly designed 70 series front ends (78 and 76 I believe) came out down here in australia maybe a year or so ago, but were only released with the new 4.5 litre common rail turbo diesel under the hood. The new powerplant I thought was the only reason why the front was redesigned. I've never seen one with a 1HZ ... interesting.

I'm surprised at all the enthusiasm ... The 4 cylinder turbo diesel Hiluxes and the new diesel V8 76 / 78 Landcruisers are standard fare around where I work, as well as heaps and heaps of HZJ79 traybacks and HZJ105 wagons. I'll post some pics soon - there's some interesting mining vehicle mods that I've seen around here.

Why don't they import the new Landcruisers / Hilux to the U.S - is it simply too much competition from american Truck companies like GMC Ford or Chev??

You guys are missing out!

Personally, I think they do not want too many lines to carry parts for and the lines that they sell are probably the high profit ones. I'm sure there is competition concerns from Detroit but that is disappearing fast as Detroit looses it's significance.
