Why don't they import the new Landcruisers / Hilux to the U.S - is it simply too much competition from american Truck companies like GMC Ford or Chev??

You guys are missing out!

Matt

I think its too hard to make them conform to american safety standards. No airbags, high centre of gravity,no crumple zone would make them fodder for lawyers when someone gets hurt.

Americans also like big spacious cabs, something a 7* does not have

In the world market they are only viable as long as the UN and Govt agencies keep buying them.
By world standards they are a low volume model sold mainly in Australia ,Saudi Arabia,Venuzuela and South Africa.
Im not sure about Japan, they dont have the 78/79 series and the 74 series is out of production leaving only the 70 swb for them.

The 4 cylinder turbo diesel Hiluxes , What kinda mileage do these get?/ I read almost 50 mpg ?????WOW

Definately not true. The official australian fuel consumption for a 2003 manual 4wd hilux cab chassis is 12.5/100 city cycle.
Thats about 19mpg in US gallons.
I guess in 03 they were using the 1KZ TE,now they would be using the 1KD FTV which I think uses the same but for more power
The only diesels to get 50 mpg are little things they sell in europe with 3 cyl ,1 litre turbo engines.
Peugeot have a convertable that gets 60 mpg
