hey all,
I recently attempted to replace my starter which I may have misdiagnosed as the problem for an intermittent no start condition. Once I got down to actually removing the starter I could not access the bolts to remove the whole starter. the manual says to remove the water crossover tube but after loosening the bolts there was emmissions equipment bolted to the back of the crossover that would not let me lift it out. I ended up replacing the starter motor without removing the base. when i put everything back i have a coolant leak presumably from the cross over tube that i could not completely remove to change gaskets. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I did try to remove the emissions equipment from the crossover but there is 4 bolts and the back two are right up against the firewall. basically everything is so tight against the firewall and blocked by the wiring harness that its makes it extremely difficult to do anything. thanks for any help!!

i can't say i've replaced the starter on a 4.7 - yet. I've read posts from tundra forums and it seems like a major undertaking. good on you for DIY. i hope someone with more knowledge on the subject chimes in.

Thanks for the reply, yeah its a major pain. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. Still haven't torn it back apart to fix the leak but hopefully I have it figured out before I do...

I'm currently in the process of this job on my 4runner and hope I don't have to ever do it again. I would like to know the thought process of the person that decided on the location of the thing... and more so the bolts that hold it in. Any tips on getting the bolts??

I didn't actually get to the bolts... I just took the starter apart while still installed and replaced the motor. Not sure if its exactly the same but from what I've read you can get the harness out of the way by removing the bolt holding it to the transmission. Then I'm hoping I can get the emmisions stuff of the cross over tube... I have also read one guy got the harder of the two bolts from the bottom with long extensions and a swivel... Good luck!

It seems to be identical. I was able to use my GX to swap relays and such during diag. How difficult was the rebuild?

My solenoid contacts looked new soni didn't change them but I think it could be done in the vehicle although it might be a pain. Changing out the starter motor itself wasn't hard. Did you take the coolant crossover out?

I have done a few starters on the 4.7 and they really really suck. The best way to get the crossover tube out is to remove the motor mounts and let the motor lean forward which will give you tons of space to work back there... Seems like a lot of extra work I know but in the end you will be happy you did it.
