background: dad ran over some sticks.

i have a background as a diesel mechanic...and i haven't been this stumped in my career (you see EVERYTHING when working on dump trucks).

ever since he ran over a few sticks at the cottage the truck has been making some funny noises. this noise sounds like a stick in the rim or brake rotor rubbing against the brake dust shield. it has a definite hollow ping to it (just like if you whopped the dust shield with your finger.)

but, this noise only occurs under acceleration and varies when i am accelerating and engaging/disengaging it from 4wd at the same time. if you accelerate lightly up to your desired speed you never hear it. it is only audible during sharp acceleration.

i am out of options...my last guess is flexplate

Heat shield around catalytic converter? Might only rattle at certain RPM. Might have gotten tweaked by a stick.

Are you able to determine where the sound is coming from (i.e. rear axle, front end, etc.?

I had a similar sound coming from my driver side brake drum. The dust shield was bent and rubbing against the drum. Bent the section that was in contact and the noise was gone.
