I know this subject has been discussed in length on here but - can anyone familiar with replacing the cassette deck that is below the NAV screen in a 2004 LC help me? If you did the install yourself, what trim panel did you use? did you have to trim it to make it fit? Do the single DIN head units that 'flip up' work there?

can anyone post photos of the finished product?
I'm fairly certain that I can get the wiring correct - but any heads up, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you guys!

This one was posted a few weeks ago, but it was a rig someone here was considering purchasing...not installed by them.
Reasonable Offer For 2003 Cruiser?

2002 LC cassette delete:

I have an older Kenwood flip-up, single-DIN in my non-nav '98. There is a fair amount of room behind the screen, the angle is adjustable, and there is some flexibility in how far it protrudes from the dash when you install it. I don't see why a flip-up unit wouldn't work there.

Crutchfield has some oversized trim panels that are intended to be cut for applications like this.

Good luck!

Thank you!!! If nothing else, I can take photo to an install shop for proof/inspiration.

That pic is not an 03 or 04 though it is a 2002 and you will have problems.
Check out my old post here

03 Stereo replacement option.. Should I try it??

Note post 14 and my pictures above in 13 about the double vs single din issue.

In your 04 you will have those same buttons below the deck and they are on a PC board thus you can't relocate them. So after all of that I determined you can fit this head unit in there

Pioneer AVH-X7700BT

it gives everything the double does just a motorized single din version...

I have yet to attempt the retrofit so if you give this a go even with an installer have them take pictures!! You will be the first I have found to do it but I fully believe it is doable. My delay has been because with my new speakers and reconned sub it sound great and I just keep delaying it...I fully intend to tackle this at some point..

Mudders want to know ! You could be the first!

Someone did it in this rig. I don't know who, or how but I'd like to know. I grabbed this pic from a "for sale" ad. I am very intrigued by this job. At some point I will be undertaking this task.

The problem is in the details. Did they simply relocate the tape deck portion somewhere hidden inside the dash or did they surgically remove it? Who did the work? AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH The agony! I literally stare at this picture for probably an hour total each week. Imagining all the possibilities of not having the outdated crap system that's in these things. My damn mirrors tilt down when I put my truck in reverse but I can't have some cool ass radio.... WTH toyota....WTH!?!?!

I'm convinced it can be removed. Whoever did this really did a nice job on the cosmetics!

I can say with complete certainty - for me, at least, that when the tape deck is diconnected the A/C does not work. So, in the process of rerouting it to a discrete location.
Also, the alpine single DIN head unit was too deep (lol, i know). There is some duct work back there that makes the mounting hole(lol again, right?) quite shallow.

I'll keep you guys abreast of developments as they come. I got turned on to the idea of mounting a media player there and totally circumventing the factory sound system....separately wire in a new amp/speakers. That is piqued my interest quite a bit

What year is the LC? Maybe the AC is year specific? @RobRed seemed to think is was not needed in the other thread I had on this topic...

2004. Robred knows tons more about this than me. There may be a way to rewire it to not lose the A/C controls. But as soon as I unplugged the tape deck - the A/C controls wouldn't even show up on the MFD.....I did not want to believe it - very cumbersome.

this has really started to steer me in his totally separate audio system wiring road. lol

I've read a few places about separating the circuit board for the AC from the tape deck and leaving that wired but removing Everything else. I haven't pulled anything apart to look so idk.... Just read it may be feasable

Hummmmm I'm 03 should be the same. I was literally going to put a head unit in my middle console. and just wire in the amp and speakers. Power is right there with the cd changer... I replaced the speakers and sub already, tied into the existing amp and head unit. As long as you don't want a display I don't see why that would not work. Keep existing head unit leave the amp hooked up and just bypass it all. Keep me posted.. I'm picking up a 24ft RV tomorrow and pulling it down to Florida with the LC.. should be a good test of the air springs. This is next on the list.....

just No hvac controls. The screen and nav worked. I would think that some of the circuitry could be unmounted from the rear of the cassette deck - but, I am in no position to do that sort of thing w/o explicit instructions. Today was mainly about info gathering

@costalcal @RobRed has videos on youtube....you should watch - the IPAD mini mounted in double DIN area is genius. I expect it to catch on in the near future.....theres no better nav/entertainment unit that can be purchased....

I am HEAVILY leaning that way...but, its raining crazy hard here right now - and I had to come in to work ....so progress delayed a bit

Yessir - I'll send you some photos tomorrow or Wed when I dig back into it. But, don't feel obligated to work for free :)

I can provide pics of the tape deck pulled apart. For the record on my '07 LX the Nav screen still illuminated but the information on the trip screen was blank. As in, the background displayed but the numbers were not present when the tape deck was unplugged. I didn't go to the HVAC screen on the NAV unit but the dash buttons that control HVAC were not functional. No lights, no response to different button pushes.

Looks like my online photo album is down right now, I'll update when service has been restored.
