I am looking at a 2002 4runner Limited with 100K. Well kept with all receiptes, never off road, always stored inside for $15K. Any comments would be appreciated. I have never owned one. Bill

It's due for a timing belt, so if that has not been done figure that into the cost. Honestly, that price seems a little high. Not out of the balpark, but probably not a great deal. There were quite a few changes through the years. Particularly with respect to the awd system that would have as compared to the earlier traditional 4wd set up. Also I don't believe the later version were offered with rear elockers. There were different springs used also, 99 being the tallest and the 01-02 being the shortest. I wouldn't be concerned at all about the mileage though other than the belt.

I have a 96 limited and I'm very happy with it. I get about 20mpg on average and it seems to have enough power for my needs. Could it be more? sure, do I need more? no. It tows my 17' sailboat just fine.

Edit: I looked around a little, and I guess that price is better than I though. I see a few sub 100k 02 ltds in the 12-14k range, but most are around the $15k mark. I guess if it's well cared for it may be a good deal.

Thanks for the reply Jetboy. I have restored several FJ40s and one FJ60 which I traded for a low mileage Tacoma 4X4. The Tacoma does find but even with the extended cab it is just too cramped for space. I like the looks and drive of the 4runner. If I do buy it I plan to move the Tac and my 75 FJ40 and build a super 60 with V8/auto locked front and rear for my heavy off road activities. Thanks again. Bill

Look for any leaks, especially at the rear main seal. Highly unlikely that there would be any leaks, but never know. The 01-02 didn't come with rear lockers, but they did come with the TRAC system. Not as good as a rear locker, but still very useful. Also comes with VSC, which if your wife/SO drives it, it's a peace of mind. I love mine and love the ride for a daily driver. I'm only selling it to get a Tacoma since I now need a truck bed. Otherwise, I'd keep it forever.

Do you like the leather? If not, I'd look into getting a Sport. Has a better looking interior, IMO...and the hood scoop! :D The only difference between the Limited and the other models is leather and auto climate control. Oh, and the two-tone exterior, which I don't like too much. The wood-grain interior trim and the thin leather that Toyota puts in their 4Runners are not to my taste. (I had a 98 Limited). I like the titanium finish much better.

As far as the price goes, that is about the expected price. Should be a good vehicle if everything checks out. Good luck with the purchase.

Check this site out for the differences by model year. Toyota 4Runner History 1996 It's pretty complete. That way you can make sure you are getting the options you want.

Other things I'm thinging of, It's difficult not to spill oil when doing oil changes, especially when removing the filter so I'd expect to see some below the filter. Check to make sure if the radio has a code set to get the code. If the little red key shaped led lights up when turned off it has a code set. It's a bit of a pain to get a master reset done.

I guess that's all I can think of at this point. Pretty minor issues.
