both about the same money either one worth considering over the other for any reason or is it purely personal preference?

I'd get the 98. The only real upgrade on the 01 from a 98 is the front diff and an ARB solves that.

An extra 106K miles is not an even swap for 3 years newer. Especially when you factor in the lx has more options right off the bat. I know I'm a little biased because I might choose the lx even if they had the same miles ;) but I could never just overlook the mileage difference. I assume the overall condition and drivability is similar or you would have mentioned them as other differences.

The one and only thing about the lc that is a plus in my book is the cheaper prices on some of the oem replacement type parts when something breaks. As an example: the side mirrors at a junk yard for the lc are $45 and the lx are $225. Of course the lx ones are motorized retractable, heated, self-dimming, lower when you go into reverse to see the curb, in addition to being fully adjustable in every way that the lc ones are. The lx does so much little stuff that the lc doesn't but you gotta pay to play! LX all the way!

Not enough info. Assuming both are in the same condition interior and exterior, same maintenance records, then I think I would get the LX with lower miles.

drive them both. In my limited experience, you need to drive them and decide. Ive drove an01's with 175k and it was pure s***. drove a 00 with 250k and it was pure as driven snow...

'98 are the best. More love was put into that year, I heard. ;)

Similar situation here. Narrowed my search down to 2 trucks.
1999, LC 180k, No service records, interior was a 6 out of 10, bottom line, I did not feel like PO took great care.
2002, LC 275k, phone book of service records, interior looked like new, no rust, absolutely no leaks, engine bay was clean as a whistle. Truck just felt right. Everything worked, no check engine lights. It was on consignment so I don't think the dealer did a great deal of "hiding" like in some cases.

I went with the 2002 with more miles because I could tell it was taken care of a great deal. Preventive maintenance is huge because sometimes when parts fail, it causes a domino effect and can be hard for some people to diagnose so they just let it go.
I would definitely go with the one that was well taken care of.
Hope this helps

It does help, unfortunately the dealer sold vehicles are all shiny, smell good, and give the appearance of cleanliness…
