I'd like to upgrade my current system to include Bluetooth and integration for my iPhone 5S.

I've heard nightmares about the system (Nakamichi) and the ability to upgrade. (Existing Head Unit is fully functional)

Can anyone make a recommendation on a head unit that I can use and NOT replace the Amp, speakers or the SUB.

Not really a Audiophile and don't need NAV. Camera would be nice but not absolutely necessary.

Does not have to have XM as I would stream that off of my phone.

Any suggestions, tips or tricks would be great...Would like to install myself.

WELCOME! Hope you enjoy your stay here! These guys are great! and have helped me quite a bit!

I have the same truck as you, There is NO harness for it so you need to tap into some wires on the harness manually for Ant and Power and something else, That info is discussed in other threads. As for the head unit upgrade if your able to wire correctly I think almost any H/U of your preference would work personally I am in the process of replacing everything, Speakers, Amp, Sub and H/U. The H/U I have on order is Pioneer 8000NEX I wanted to fill the entire space and not just have a crappy looking single din unit in there as the previous owner had. Cant wait to replace it! But good luck hope this info helped ya.

Absolutely agree...Double DIN is the only way to go.

That looks like and awesome HU...A bit more than i want to spend but I am sure that its well worth it!

Will that HU work with the Nakamichi Amp?

Thanks. Great info on the install. Any recommendations on a head unit?

Um I would say Any of the new Pioneer NEX Models I was going to go with the Kenwood but they have not upgraded the ram in like 3 years so its still kinda jerky and slow responding other than that good units tho.

The Appradio 3 is great for iPhone integration! That is what I use! And it works perfect for everything I need, plus you can use your iphone maps for navigation if you want it, also it's will backup camera ready.

One final draw for me was a clean OEM look which I believe it has IMO...

Here is a great read on stereo upgrading

Appradio 3 looks good. Like the pricing.

Does it require you to use a cable or does it communicate via Bluetooth?

OOPS...

Also, does the Appradio work with the the Nakamichi amp?

Appradio 3 is built into lots of pioneer units and I have not personally experienced it yet but from what I read it can communicate via BT or Wire connect that feature looks very awesome to me as well! Cant wait to use it!

I have a low budget pioneer FH-P8000BT that does CD, am/fm, blue tooth calling, blue tooth audio, and USB connection. The only cons about it are user interface takes getting used to and the Bluetooth audio disconnects from iPhone after turning the car off (common issue, no fix other than reconnecting every time). Think I paid around $125. And it has the common low volume hiss, but I don't think it's the HU. I had a audio shop perform the install since there isn't a harness available.

I just ordered at Pioneer fh-x700BT for my other vehicle that appears to be newer model with same features. If the BT audio stays connected after turning car off and on, I will be a happy camper. I paid about the same $125 on amazon. Radios have really become robust at a small price these days.

Thanks very much!

Would love to hear what you think of the new one when you get it.

Yes, and yes...

It requires an additional HDMI cord to which you then add the apple HDMI+Lightning to Lightning adapter to fully integrate your iPhone. For example: When my iPhone is plugged in; I can control my iPhone directly from the HU (for a limited selection of apps, which they are continually expanding). Also When I play Pandora, it shows the album artwork as well as it gives me the ability to like/dislike songs and change the station. Finally when I use google/apple maps and netflix, it automatically projects the directions or video to the HU which then gives me turn by turn navigation or lets me watch videos (the later being illegal but who cares).

and yes, if I'm lazy or just driving a quick distance it will also connect via bluetooth. I can: Play Pandora (in bluetooth it only allows you to skip to the next song), play music from the iphone, call/receive calls, as well as give you the audio from your directions if your using turn by turn nav from google/apple maps.

Also, does the Appradio work with the the Nakamichi amp?

I can't really answer this question... because I have a different amp. However from what CEO714 said I think you need to use Rob's page (I posted it earlier). And then spice into the factory harness to get the necessary power and speaker adapters (Rob's page should guide you through this).

As one final note.. I really do like my stereo, however there are some basic things that I would recommend.

First; get the parking brake bipass, its great and gives you full functionality of the HU without needing to doublepump the parkingbreak.

Second.. Jailbreak your iPhone, this is amazing... It basically turns your HU into a Mirror of your iphone allowing you to do everything from your HU... Just Google videos of appradio extension.

Hmm well if you have any other Questions just ask... or since your in Seattle send me a PM and you can stop by my place and check it out in person

cheers

I think the answer to your question regarding the amp is a hit and miss.
It worked for some, but it didn't for for others.
I have the Orion AVR6.1 with all the bell and whistles and I had to bypass the factory amplifier. But I am in Australia.

Off Topic but how do you like your Pfran LED kit? Worth the cost? Any issues? I had a great kit for my Acura TSX never had any issues but it cost like 40 bucks just wondering if building one would get the same results? Thanks

Love the lighting kit! Provides really nice interior lighting! It's super bright and white!

As far as the install! It was a pice of cake. One reason it might be a little more is because he throws in a red map light as well as spare lights.

Anyways I would buy it again in a heart beat and I don't think that it would be worth it to piece together all the bits. Also you said that it was $40 to do your TSX; honestly I think it would cost more to do the LC because there are so many more lights!

My one annoyance with LED is when the lights dim they shutter a bit. But overall love the lights!
