I've read all the great post here on DYI, I guess I've decided to have the work done by an independent for $650.00 looks like $300 in parts, remanufactured starter and a couple of gaskets and 3+ hrs of labor. Seems reasonable ?
75K miles seems low to be in need of a starter already.

If I was paying someone to do the work I would put a new Toyota starter in there or have them do the rebuild with Toyota parts. I have had terrible luck with remanufactured starters from NAPA and other parts stores. $350 labor doesn't sound unreasonable for the job.

For a new Toyota starter contact Cdan at American Toyota. You might have to throw your mechanic a few more bucks to use your parts as they lose the markup but I would say its worth it.

The starter contacts wear with each start so the miles don't matter as much as the number of starts.

The remanufactured starter is actually comming from the Toyota dealer. So I believe it to be an OEM starter made by Bosh I think.

You should be golden then.

I don't think Bosch ever made the OEM starters for the 100. It should be a Denso I believe. I second at least getting a price from CDan. Your not obligated to buy but you'll at least get a second opinion on price.

I don't think your estimate is bad by any means but it never hurts to look into it another way. Did the dealer say Bosch specifically?

$650 is alot of coin. Especially considering it's prolly only the contacts that need replacing. If you're at all handy with turning a wrench, it's not a difficult job, just tedious getting to it.

I bought the parts from the dealer, $46 total, before I learned of C'Dan's discount (American Toyota is about 10 minutes away).

wide contact: 28226-54412

You can get the whole set on Ebay for $21:

I'm going by faith that my starter will last long enough to wear out another set of contacts, and maybe put a remanufactured starter in it the next time the contacts act up, and take my chances in the interim if the starter were to fail completely and leave me stranded.

Cdan was around $230 + core when I got mine in October. Just doing the contacts is fine, if you don't mind paying $350 in labor again when they fail...could be six months, could be several years. In my mind too big a gamble if you're not doing the work yourself.

Don't know who is in your area, but there may be someone on this board who has done the job and is good at turning spanners, and is in your area, and is willing to give you a hand/show you how it is done (for a good percentage) and also make contact with another like minded person, and you would learn some thing about your vehicle as well. Besides the % cash payment involved, you would also need to supply beer and food, and some travel money for gas.! You never know, just ask, someone may be able to offer their services, maybe not, but worth a try!

Starter is only $171.90 for 3/00-3/04 LC's at toyota-parts.com.
