I'm looking to replace my OE carpeted tailgate storage covers with something more resistant to stains and abuse than the OE carpet.
Some kind of heavy plastic or hard surface is what I was thinking. Does anybody make such a product?
I'm not looking to cover the whole tailgate as I want to still use the storage.

You can also retain the OEM storage and cover the tailgate with this pad from Trekboxx. Snaps are added to the factory plastic to keep the pad in place and the pad is then easily removed to access the storage underneath.

IMO, I think this is problem that does not require a (EDIT) $200+ $125+ solution.

For $40, Canvasback makes a rugged cover that is waterproof. It attaches with Velcro, so full access to the OEM storage compartment and spare tire lowering mechanism is still possible. I have the cover installed and have zero complaints; it protects the carpet/plastic trim and ruggedizes the top of the tailgate.

If you purchase only the tailgate pad from Trekboxx it is $125. Not cheap, but definitely an upgrade over a simple canvas cover. It gets more expensive if you want to replace the OEM storage with a flat platform which Trekboxx offers in a Line-X finish or Richlite.

I installed this padded tailgate cover with industrial strength Velcro strips. I didn't like the idea of drilling into the plastic tailgate cover. Works as well as the snaps.
Quality item from a quality vendor .
