200 Serious Break Accumulator Noise

I have a 2019 that when I brake, makes a strange noise coming front and left of me. At first, I thought it was new brakes just settling but realized a few things...

1-it's not every time I brake (but more often than not)

2-it's not a metallic sound (more like an ESC from a rc car/plane), but kind of high pitched

3-it doesn't last for the entire duration of the brake, just for the first couple of seconds

4-my pressure on the pedal doesn't seem to matter

5-temp doesn't seem to influence whether it shows up or not, nor does drive time

It's driving me friggin' crazy. I can only assume it's some sort of electrical something in conjunction with my brakes...but I'd prefer not to listen to it for the next 200,000 miles. :bang:

i know the sound you are referring to...this is coming from another place and almost sounds like an electrical signal talking to another function of the vehicle.
 
cant' get the video to upload...will continue to work on it...in the meantime, it sounds like a dog whistle.
 
welp, I wasn't making it up. Local dealership said that it's my accumulator making a dog whistle noise and that it's "normal"...which is complete bulls***. My 2016 didn't make a sound when braking...and, they did admit that other models of toyota have complained about a similar noise from the FJ and 4Runner.

As I told the guy, for $80k, I shouldn't hear anything when I brake...he said he'd pass it along to their field engineer, which basically means I have to live with the noise.
 
Sorry to hear that, I haven't run across anyone else here reporting that issue. I'd write Toyota HQ and tell them of your trouble and reference that service order. Being that it is your second 200 model they should consider your concern and work to remedy it in whatever it takes. I've heard people taking their issues to HQ and getting some satifactory results in return. Sometimes is lazy dealerships not wanting to do what it takes to make things right.

You may want to go to a different dealership. You may also want to test-drive one of their new cars to see if it makes a similar noise.

Some dealers love to say "that's normal" just to shut you up.
 
I went a picked it up and the service manager said he was going to get an answer. I kinda believe him, to be honest. I asked if replacing it would do the trick...said he'd find out. Problem is that i don't have a dealership close. I know for a fact that they all don't do it...i've driven others...but if you google Toyota brake accumulator noise, you'll get enough reading to make your eyes bleed. This is one of those situations where I'll need to be a pest long enough and they'll fix it.

If so yeah it's normal. Toyota revised this part for 2016+ so those might be louder than others.
Folks on the 4runner forums seem to notice more on 2017+ models.

But all the pumps make noise to varying degrees. I can hear mine at times, but it's quiet inside the cabin.
But it sounds like a pump motor, not a squeak. I'd be a pest about it until they showed me and proved the noise was the accumulator pump and it was indeed normal.

You should be able to check the accumulator noise by just pumping the brake. Ignition on, engine off, and hood open should make it easy to hear.
 
On an $80k dollar vehicle there shouldn't be annoying sounds that are "normal" that you have to live with... Annoy the crap out of them until they make it right. At least that's my $0.02

Agree completely on the sound....and I'll annoy Toyota as long as this noise annoys me.

That's kind of the sound...but in my case, the car MUST be on for the noise to happen. And, my noise is much higher pitched and louder. I could handle that noise...but this, I can't. I have very sensitive hearing and high pitched noises drive me nuts. It's like I have a bad case of tinnitus.
 
Yeesh! It’s like these trucks get more complex all the time. I hate noises like this.
 
UPDATE: I sent an email to Toyota Corporate on Tuesday and by Wednesday, they had called me. They have assigned my case to a regional rep and a specialist of some kind that they claim will be looking into my issue. From the sounds of the conversation I had, this isn't a new thing. I think that it helped that I've owned 7 Toyota's in the past 10 years...two of them being LC. ;)

Despite not getting a lot of satisfaction at the dealership, I'm please with the response from HQ. Now let's see if they can make this right. The noise is getting to the point where if it can't be fixed, I'll most likely trade it.
 
UPDATE:

Field Engineer has "tested and reproduced" the same noise on the 2019 Land Cruisers that he drove in Kansas City. Claims that it's "Normal" for the pump to make this noise.

I need MUDs help in refuting this claim. Again, my 2016 made no such noise and I have yet to year of any of you reporting it. Can any of you personally attest to the 200 series, later model better, making this noise in your vehicle?

While it sounds petty, if Toyota can't remedy this situation, there's a good chance I'll sell the vehicle. I simply can't enjoy driving this car when I hear a dog whistle every time I touch the brakes.
 
Just keep pushing them. We had a window issue on a brand new Audi Q7, after 6 or 7 times taking it in we contacted a lemon law agency and they finally threw up their arms and did a full buy back. If you’re spending 80k on a car it shouldn’t be making odd noises.
