Does it have the gas tank under the passenger seat? If so it's not a '79.
not realy true I've seen alot of "78" that were sold as 79's its a cross over year ... looks like the parts truck is the new square bezel and the runner is the early round :meh: good luck with the sale

The vin plate has manufacture date 4/1979 on the yellow truck. The clear title says 1979. I am not an expert on these vehicles, but have purchased alot of parts and everything I have ordered for a 1979 worked well. I do know that in 1979 partial years some steering knuckles had different size studs that hold the steering arms on.

According to the manufacturer parts data the fuel tank switched from under the seat with a 12/78 manufactur date to under the tube with a 1/79 manufacture date. Are you saying Toyota has there information incorrect?

Knowledge pissing contest

Who gives a :censor:! Are you going to buy the vehicle?? If not stay outta the thread! TTT

I am trying to find out what's for sale. It's hard to buy something with incorrect information! It makes a lot of difference to me if they are both '79's or if one is a '78 and the other is a '79.

WHY don't you take your own advice about staying out of the thread, if your not interested in buying the vehicles!

I listed the vehicle by the vin plate on the driver's side rocker. It has Apr./1979. It does not appear to have been changed (Inside vehicle has never been painted and area where vin plate is has not been painted). I will look at the parts vehicle and check the plate on it also. I was told by the person that I bought them from that both were 1979. I am not trying to falsely advertise these vehicles and I will take any advice anyone has that will help me definitively identify the vehicles. sorry for the confusion.

Toothdoc, Please verify the VIN number on the passenger side of the frame rail at the front of the truck. My guess is you will find it does not match the VIN number on the driver side door frame data plate. It is very easy to swap those data plates, just two rivets, the frame number, not so easy. There should also be a dataplate on the firewall on the passenger side of the truck inside the engine compartment.

The data plate on the firewall matches the one on the driver's side. I will look for the number on the passenger side frame.

I believe about 5 hours. I have a friend that lives right at the GA/Tn line and i visited him about a year ago and I am pretty sure it was right about 5 hours. I live in SE KY and I can be in TN in about 45 min.

Hopefully I can supply some more info for anyone interested. Neither of the trucks are '79-83 vintage. The configuration of the gas tank, cowl vent grate, and other small clues point to the pre '78 years on the main rig. The parts rig was either a hash up of many rigs (my best guess) or is close to the '74/'75 vintage by the solid side glass, the split hood and the upper installed wipers. Someone did put a '79 and newer rollbar and pads into the parts rig for some reason.

This is not necessarily a bad thing as the '78 and earlier rigs had better steel in the body.

As a note, to avoid any misconception of my post, I am not calling anyone a liar or a cheat, just trying to help identify the trucks so both the buyer and seller can feel good about the purchase. I am actually sad as I could use some post 79 parts!

Thanks for the information. I will look for the vin on the frame and try to sort it out. I have no intention of misrepresenting the vehicle.

The yellow/main rig's tub is pre-78: No side window defrost vents in the dash, E-brake is by T handle on the dash. The parts rig tub might be 79 or later, assuming the shifter hump cover plate sitting on the jump seat is original to the tub. Can't make out where the E-brake handle is on the parts rig, but if it's on the floor, at least the tub itself is 79 or later. But agreed, the parts rig is a hash up of different year's parts. The sides to the top, hood, windshield frame, etc, all look like they were swapped onto the parts rig, so I don't think we can conclude that the parts rig isn't a 79 without checking VIN and other details.

And no, this isn't a knowledge pissing contest, just an attempt to help out fellow Mudders & Toothdoc ... ;)

Thanks for the information. Whatever year they are, they are for sale. The new parts on the yellow rig have cost more than 4,000. The rig has not been driven 200 miles with new parts. It is a very good running vehicle and drives extremely well.

Bump The under hood plate and Driver door plate match. The vin on the passenger side frame is not legible. Suspect attempt to remove by previous owner. It is licensed and insured as a 1979.
