1st or 2nd Gen Tundra for using like an actual truck? (1 Viewer)

So I bought a 2000 Tundra 4x4 in 2003 and still have it, It has 250K miles and as worked great as a work truck. I have hauled all kinds of crazy stuff with it over the years. With that said I recently purchased a 2020 Tundra 4x4 as I did not want to ever purchase the new technology of 6 cylinder and turbo nonsense. The old tundra is still my daily and will continue to be until it finally gives up the ghost. The new Tundra hopefully will be the last truck I will ever need to purchase. It has the room and towing capability for anything I will need to do. I am a little old school in that there is no replacement for displacement.

LOL... DC short bed "use as an actual truck" sorry man that's a grocery getter! Toyota has not made too many real trucks in the last 15 years, but you can find a regular cab long bed with a 5.7 and 4x4 if you look around long enough.

The other crappy thing is that a long bed in Toyota seems to be 7'11." If you're not completely empty, sheet goods will rest on the top lip of tailgate.

I’ve had 8-10? Tundras. 3.4l manuals, 2UZs, 5.7s, all of them.

I love a 04-06 CC for the 2UZ and smaller size, but for towing and interior space, the newer ones win. If I didn’t tow so much, I’d try to find a really clean 06 to keep forever. I towed a lot with my 1st gens, but damnit, the 2nds gens are beast. My ‘17 has a 38 gallon tank. This big gurl wheels pretty good too!

My dream build (with no kids) is a 2nd gen, regular cab, 5.7, 35”s, lockers, with a light weight camper. I could live in it.

I have a longbed 3500 diesel on 35s as well. I don’t need a penis extender, just something that can tow a 6,000 lb trailer without white knuckles.

Coming from a guy with a GX and “FJ”, the grocery getter comment is laughable...

This is exactly what I’m after. A truck that can tow, and carry a lightweight pop-up camper. I don’t need it to carry massive loads of construction materials. It’s primarily a hunting and fishing rig. No kids, but two bird dogs, which brings me to the DC requirement, and my pop-up camper requires a short bed.

The silver one has my “single guy eye” checking it out, but the camper wouldn’t fit, so I might check in to the black one again. I talked to the seller and he buys Tundras with minor accident damage and fixes them. This one got a new box and rear bumper. Low miles and the 4.7 which I love. It doesn’t get the full tow rating, but I would seldom pull over 6,000 lbs, so I think getting the 4.7 wouldn’t be the end of the world. I do really like that engine.

Not sure what you mean by that. I have a RCLB Tundra as well. Lockers, 4.88s, 35s. It goes lots of places and hauls lots of things. Mostly use it for work and winter hunting trips. Gets stuck in snow pretty easilly due to the weight, hence the lockers. The GX is more for summertime camping and I don't own an FJ.

My Bad. I saw “FJ” in your sig and stopped reading. Those things provoke the gag reflex in me;)

You should add the Tundra into your sig too. It looks legit... Is that a Grandby? What’s the story on the ARB? I’ve only seen the Safari bar on there which is barely good enough. The Deluxe Bar you have is the real deal.

I want this truck so so so bad. More pics?

My youngest is 13 now. Few more years and I’ll lose the back seat.

My knockoff camper had an aluminum frame like yours, but not quite as sleek and nice. 20% the cost though.

As long as your ok with pin stripes (and more) the Tundra has impressed the s*** out of me. Following 80s and 60s with lockers all over the place. Only 5%? Of the time is it just toooo wide and I can’t. Also carry a chain saw. Hell, it’s got a 9.5” front diff :)

Those stupid fender flares kill me! It’s hard to find a RCLB with a 5.7.

I’ll buy a previous wrecked truck all day. If you’re going to use it abs keep it for years, who cares?

The 4.7 with that 2nd gen frame, leafs, etc, would do a -little- better than an 06 I’d think. The 4.7 2ns gens also don’t get the huge rear and and 4.30s I don’t believe.

Good to know on dif size. I wasn’t aware they changed those much, but it makes sense given the extra 100 HP and 3,000 lb tow.

And a 10.5” rear end. It’s beefy. I like the size of the 00-06 Tundra a lot better but 07+ is made for harder use.

There are a couple RCLB 5.7 4x4s on craigslist in denver right now. Very rare indeed. 1820 lb payload.

Here is one with 35k;

@jiggletits

That’s actually a good price! I want to buy it and just park it behind the shop for a few years until I’m ready for it.

I can’t decide on a LB or SB? The SB would take a 4WC ok, but I can definitely see the benefits of the LB.

More pics of yours?

I’ve had several Grandby’s over the years, and a flippac. Stock pic for ref.

It’s got a topper on it right now (not the one pictured)

And again, what’s the story with the ARB? Are they now making a Deluxe Bar for the Tundra and I didn’t get the memo?

Not sure what you mean by story? It's an ARB bumper made for the truck, got it in 2019. I found it after about 30 seconds of google searching, then waited a few months until 4WP had a 10% off sale. As far as I know they make the only bumpers on the market that are crash tested to ensure the airbags still work as they should.

Well, last time I looked (which was pre 2019) they were only making the Sahara Bar for Tundras and I’ve never seen a Tundra other than yours with the full barwork. Tons of Sahara bars, but none like yours until now. That’s great that they make the proper bars now. Thanks for the answer.
