TL;DR: 1st Gen Tacoma (looks like actually years '98-2004) OEM Integrated rotary fog-light switch on the headlight switch/stalk on the steering column. It works but you gotta do some wiring...see the bottom of this post for part numbers. EDIT: also can help with adding "interval" wipers if your Tacoma came without.

I'm in a 2003 Dbl Cab Tacoma TRD 4x4. Its got a set of PIAAs rigged up from the P.O. that was using some random, generic rocker switch that stuck out a mile and didn't even fit correctly into the rectangular hole the guy cut out in the dash :( and I've wanted to change it up but have found the Tacoma to be severely lacking in the switch blank department. I've got an auto and the e-locker, so between the diff lock switch, the ECT switch, and the hazard light switch, my dash is basically already full (other than the two lower ones under the radio down by the shifters, but those are not very convenient to reach). So I figured I needed to switch it up a bit in there and a couple of the things I came up with were:
  • relocate the ECT switch down low by the shifter (this is going to take some extension to the wiring and will be later. fwiw, i already found a horizontal style ECT switch out of a non-USA hillux)
  • relocate the fog light switch into a combination headlight switch/stalk on the column like is found in 3rd Gen 4Runners (and Land Cruisers and a whole slew of other Toyota vehicles)
So I searched and searched and never found anybody doin' this on a 1st Gen Tacoma, but I did find folks retrofitting it on the 3rd Gen 4Runners that didn't come with fogs, so I figured it might work on my 2003 Tacoma...(even though I already knew that the 4Runners are inherently different still as some of them came with most of the wiring still even if they didn't get the OEM fog-lights...mostly the later years...like 98+)

Anyway, so once I saw the T4R guys doing it, I was like, ok, for sure it'll work on my 2003 Tacoma--the 4Runner is so freaking close to the same as the Tacoma, I'd bet the switches just drop right in. And, well, I was right, but first I was wrong....

So I grabbed the part number the T4R guys were doing and tracked a used one down on ebay and ordered it up. Got it in and to my disappointment, it didn't fit. The main "box" part of the switch was much larger and it would not fit into the same slots on the column as my original one. Then as I was looking at them in disappointment, and then looking back at different ones I would find in searches on ebay, and looking up the part numbers in the EPC, I noticed there were two unique versions of the 3rd Gen T4R switch stalk. One that was listed as for 08/1999-2002, and then another one that was for 07/1998-07/1999. Then looking closer to the images of them on ebay and elsewhere, I noticed the "box" section of the switch on the earlier T4R one looked a lot closer to the "box" section of the switch out of my 2003 Tacoma. Then I noticed in the EPC, that that one was listed also to fit the 1993-1999 Celica. So I tracked one down on ebay from a 96 Celica that had the rotary fog-light switch on it and ordered it up. I was super stoked to find out when it arrived that it fit right in, plugged right in, and all my lights still functioned as normal (yeah, I shoulda checked the wiring diagrams, but, meh, I didn't). It just needs a couple extra pins wired up for the fog light to work. The junkyard one came with a short bit of the wiring harness so just have to figure out exactly how it needs to go...I'm still working on this part and will update once I have it squared away but after looking at the two harnesses, I'm a bit confused and will def need to grab the wiring diagrams and trace the wires.

There was a couple small differences between the shaft/stick portion of the two stalks and that is that the new one has more of an upward angle on it than the original one and is possibly a tad bit shorter. The possible slightly shorterness doesn't bother me--it should be basically the exact same on the T4R--but the slightly more upward angle really bothered me aesthetically, as the default/off position of the wiper switch one did not match the upward angle on the other side now. So, I figured, well, maybe I can use the wiper switch stalk from the same years Celica...nope, its got a rear-wiper...so perhaps some other Toyota model has one that will work...so I dug deeper and then found that the non-fog light switch stalk from the Celica also fit a handful of other Toyota vehicles and one of them is the 1999-2001 Camry, which I knew doesn't have the rear wiper. Again tracked one down on ebay (actually listed on ebay as from a '99 Avalon, but supposedly fit the same years Camry...) and from the images, it looked like it'd fit the bill. So I ordered it up, and Voila!, it fit right in, plugged right in, works perfect, and has the same upward angle. Sweet!

At this point, as stated earlier, I'm still working on the actual fog light wiring but I think I'm going to have to track down the wiring diagrams for each the Celica and the Tacoma and figure out where the differences are and whether or not the fog lights would still need the PIAA relays in line (I'm thinking yes).

Anyway, part numbers:
  • 84140-20560 - 07/1998-07/1999 4runner headlight combination switch/stalk with fog (also fits 08/1995-05/1996 celica)
  • 84652-2G011 - 08/1999-06/2001 Camry wiper switch/stalk, with interval
And the pics, original Tacoma switch/stalks, vs the new ones I used, how it looks from driver position with the new switches, and the old vs new wire harnesses:

Thanks for the tip. I love the stock-ish option as opposed to a mish-mash of toggle switches all over the place. I see you have a highly optioned Taco already - cruise and interval wipers. Hell mine didn't even come with a clock - that's where I put the controls or the AudioVox cruise control.

Did soma Tacomas not come with interval wipers? I've not seen that and just assumed all would have it... So if true, then this thread can also help out there as well... if someone has a Tacoma without it and wanted to add it, all they'd need to do is get the interval wiper switch stalk and swap it right in. The logic for it is all built onto that switch stalk. In my searches on this topic, I found a forum of Rav4 folks that are doing that exact swap using Prado/4Runner ones that swap in and are good to go (found them doing this fog switch swap too! - RAV4EVER :: Установка противотуманных фар (фары, проводка, выключатель).)

And if anybody is interested, I'd be willing to let my original wiper switch go. I paid $20 plus shipping for the camry one so if I could get the same for mine, that'd be fine.

Yep my '03 is a regular cab short bed 3rz 4X4 manual trans. No cruise, no interval wipers, no clock, radio only no tape or CD. I can't believe I've been driving it for over 13 years and the fix for interval wipers was that easy.

PM sent.

Thanks, Eric

Interval wiper stalk received, installed and fully functional. Easiest upgrade ever - barely a one banana job. Thanks man!

Wow I really want that fog light deal. Could wire my 12" LED bar to it as I will no longer have fog lights soon. That way I don't have to do that awkward reach to the switch under where the ash tray used to be
