Hi Guys, a friend of a friend rolled his late model hilux I believe it's a 1kd 3.0, any one done a conversion with one of these engines into a BJ74?

Going to take a look at it in the near future, what concerns engine wise for a rolled vehicle, any things I should be looking for as concerns as it will be a bit of a drive to take a look?

Will be complete engine and gearbox and transfer swap

Whats wrong with the 13BT? I dont mind the 1KD FTV? but I think it would be a backward step replacing a 13BT with one. Its a computer controlled engine with all sorts of sensors, one for the tech heads. They have all sorts gizmos connected to the accelerator pedal and transmission which you would have to replicate or find a way of bypassing in the 74.
If your 13BT is shot, I would rebuild it.

Thanks for the replies. Fair enough, I did a bit more research on these and a few issues with them, B/BT engines are not perfect either, for the cost of a reliable diesel and keeping it in good running order here in OZ it will be cheaper to put a v8 in

LOL Delancy,
the only B engine I would consider would be the 15bt, but that are way to expensive, for the price of a second hand 15bt with unknown history I can buy a brand new V8 crate motor with warranty and for an extra few grand can get a 6 speed auto to boot,

Have you added up the costs of a V8 swap? Ever wondered why people sell V8 landcrusers for the parts value only or why they try and run them on dedicated gas?
Diesels are a 1 up big expense but once fitted they can go for decades without much more than oil/filter/injector changes.
I really like my FJ73 with the 1HZ in it and used units have come down a lot in recent years.
Selling off your old 13BT was not a good thing to do.

I agree with rosco, reliability is the first thing that comes to mind comparing standard V's v8 or anything non factory. my 13b-t rebuild so far has come to about $4200 doing as much as the labor myself but not skimping on new parts (not including turbo mod/repair yet to come).
and as for power it has plenty already have not even played with the fuel and boost yet. granted im still learning and i still have a few problems to work through but thats half the fun!

what can u get a used 13b-t for? because at the end of the day it would just be plug and play.

On ebay or gumtree in last week or so there was a small dyna truck, with cherry picker on a private property asking $4800, the 13bt had only 93k on the clock, not including the hours to power the cherry
Round that to $4500 or under happy days,

The 13bt is a strong engine and good power, not amazing, many a good story about them and many not so good, I bought it for the same reasons all your guys did, but I got fingered, I didn't see good fuel economy I didn't get the reliability. I sold what I could to get another daily driver and I don't regret it.
The H engines are well supported here and maybe an option, I understand the ease of the b to plug and play but I don't see me going down that track again.
There is plenty of F engines as well but no thanks. V8 have a bad rep of sucking the fuel, but that depends on how you set them up and drive them, and are usually better on fuel than toyota petrol engines, which most of the v8 parts for sale are ones that some one has changed from an F to a v8 and now want to go diesel spending all there dollars on an over priced diesel to save the weekly fuel bill not taking into account the amount they are spending changing the engine to a diesel will actually take a few years to balance the till.

If I was to buy all the V8 conversion bits new it is an expensive exercise, but as you say Rosco there are heaps out there for cheap second hand with all the conversion bits. A standard V8 can last decades as well. There is many options these days and the right option for me will present it self in time.

Thanks for the heads up Oldtoy

Can't help you with the 1kd into a 70 but if its been rolled make sure you can at least turn it over by hand.
Best would be to try and see if you can hear it run. Rough running while cold could be a slightly bent rod. If you can't even turn it over by hand, RUN. Also check for oil in the intake.

After rolling mine, it wouldn't turn over even with the injectors removed.

Ps. If the motors good, i say have a go. Nice little torquey motor with plenty of potential.
