Hello,

I have an HZJ77 with a 1HZ that was retro fitted with a CT26 Turbo along with an injection pump out of 1HDT. I purchased this not too long ago and have been chasing a problem having to do with a lack of power even for a 1HZ along with excessive smoke. The following are the symptoms:

Idles fine, runs smooth, upon acceleration begins to smoke right away, smokes under any kind of load, turbo spools up fine and hits 10psi as it should, EGT's climb high even under mild load, upwards of 1200, with the fuel set very conservative, any lower and it wouldnt run.

What I have done so far to try to solve the problem:

Performed compression test, all cylinders registered right around 500psi

Performed oil cap test, no noticeable blow by.

Had the turbo checked out, as well as the waste gate by reputable shop

Had the entire pump and injectors rebuilt and dialed in per 1HZ specs by reputable shop.

Set the timing using dial indicator per FSM spec.

Does not burn oil, based on dip stick level

Made sure the timing marks at all three(both cam gears and crank pulley) locations were at TDC just in case any of those were installed wrong.

I've dialed down the fuel screw all the way down to where it barely had any power and it would still puff black smoke.

I know this topic has come up many times and I've read probably all the threads on the issue, I feel like I have checked all the main components.

Oh and the coolant temps seem to be excessive to, at 210F when climbing a mild grade, not sure if that is related or a separate issue.

Even drove a buddies non turbo 1HZ just to get a baseline for what it should feel like, and definitely night and day difference.

I am at a complete loss where to go from here. Could the injection pump from the 1HDT be the issue of being non compatible with the 1HZ? It feels like the pump is on a completely different schedule then everything else.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I am beyond frustrated.

First thing I would check is the hose from the airbox to the turbo. When they get old, they can suck in and collaspe causing a massive air restriction. Remove the hose and take it for a quick test drive. Not recommended for dusty conditions

Yep tried that, no change except for loud turbo noise.

Correction on the history of the injection pump, BTW the PO did the turbo conversion so I just speculating based on the research I have done.

The pump seems to be original 1HZ, the reason i think that is because the fuel lines are the smaller 4mm, not the larger as in the 1HDT

But it does have a boost compensator, which I believe was taken off a 1HDT pump and retrofitted on the 1HZ pump.

When I had the pump rebuilt, it was per 1HZ specs, and I feel very confident with it being correct as it was done by a shop Ive used before who are very knowledgeable.

My other speculation may be that the actual pump timing gear may be off, could that be a possibility? Or would there be other symptoms?
