Hey diesel mudders,
Thought I would be proactive and get the truck up and ready for the winter. At least I can wrench in the warmth, rather than the fingers going numb cold.
Has anyone replaced the factory glows on the hdt?
If so, where did you source the new set from? Cost? Working well?
Finally, anyone out there wire a manual glow switch to their hdt?
Cheers,

Steve

Hey Steve - Bought some glow plugs off 4wheel Auto as they had 'em in stock. Might be cheaper options.....

Curious why you would need a manual glow on your HDT?

When I was looking there were sets available in the US on eBay for 96$ HKT if I am correct, I ended up buying them off a local guy thou, I can update with a link when I get home.

I'm wanting to run a manual glow since my truck gets really fussy in the winter time when it comes to starting. It can however have to do with fading glows, so I might be just doing tho as over-kill. Second, i usually ski tour quite a bit, and my truck can be parked on the side of a highway for extended periods in the cold with no way to plug in. Just another nice way to get the truck running and a little less worry.

A properly functioning glow system will be better in cold conditions than a manual glow because after start up it senses the engine temp and keeps applying a lower power setting of glow until the proper engine temperature is achieved. If you are having glow issues. First check the glow plugs, then the glow relays and the temperature sensor.

How do you "check" glow plugs?

Take a tester n see if you can continuity once you have removed the bar. if u do great, if you don't well you get the idea.

Or pull them out n use a car charger at 12v.

I ordered a set from eBay Australia. I believe it cost me around $80 shipped. Much cheaper than the $35 each I was quoted by most places in Canada. I ordered from "onlineautoparts". They are VSP brand plugs.

I dont know if there benefit to go aftermarket glow plugs when OEM are relatively cheap, $22.40.

I ordered my NGK plugs from Rock Auto in the US and mine is a 24V Nissan engine that was never sold in the US. I suggest you cross reference the Toyota to NGK part numbers on the NGK web site and then search Rock Auto with those numbers. That is how I found mine. They were just over $6 a plug. Got all six plugs shipped here for less than the cost of one NGK plug sold locally. :)

Using Canuksafari's advice, and the part # thread post # 54:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tec...ber-thread-no-chit-chat-parts-requests-3.html

it looks like NGK part # Y-715R is $11.10 ea at Rockauto.com. They ship out of the UK, and shipping to Canada is actually a few bucks cheaper than having them sent to the US. Not bad. Akella's price for OEM Toyota (likely NGK as well) is pretty good as well.

Figured I'd bump this, just ordered 6 NGK Y-751R glow plugs from Rock Auto, $8.34CAN each, $24.70 shipping from Great Britain, total = $77.68, not bad.

I did the same thing earlier in the year. Identical length to the original plugs and they've been working flawlessly since December.

Glow plugs showed up today, from the UK, pretty impressive!

Was that by FedEx? Did you have to pay them any brokerage fees?

That was with FedEx, the other option was DHL and I've had awful experiences with them in the past (my package was in WPG for a week before they attempted delivery), and no brokerage fees.

Glow plugs

Hey guys,

I did the same thing for my HD-T the pugs arrived in canada the next day and then a day longer to get to my door. but 2 days from the UK! bought 2 sets for the same shipping charge. right around $120.

Question my plugs were different length than the Y715R plugs, see pick?

The ones that came out were JKC 11v 64031. is this an OME plug or after market? what is the original make and P/N?

Cheers

sorry about the poor pic my phone is almost done.

I don't know enough about this engine to say which plug is correct for it (and you can research the matter as well as I can).

But those two plugs don't look to me to be equivalant to one another. In other words - I suspect they're meant for different engines.

No matter what brand of plug I buy, the dimensions should conform almost exactly to a standard.

I found this stored on my computer so I think it is the dimension standard for my particular plugs:

So I think you should double-check you've got the correct plugs there before fitting them.
