Hi There - I recently purchased a JDM '92 HDJ81 with 110k kms on it and its leaking oil out of the air intake - BAD. The oil leak seams minor around town, but on the highway she leaks about 1L of oil per 100 Km's! I noticed the engine had a blow by canister installed when I purchased it, but there was no signs of oil anywhere on the engine or air filter (Air Raid that was unfortunately installed by prev owner). The filter is now saturated. I have not seen any threads on here indicating such a significant loss of oil. Is it possible that the Turbo seals are gone? Or, does she need a rebuild at 110k (??!!!!)? If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated.... Thanks.

This cannot be correct. Blow-by return from the breather to the air intake system is post-filter, pre-turbo. The oil can't flow back to saturate the filter against the airflow. Are you sure the filter wasn't one of those 'oiled' jobs to start with?

How are you measuring oil loss? By Collected blow-by in the catch tank or through loss in engine oil? Any smoke issues? Any deposits were youpark the vehicle?

if you open your intake and you have significand amount of oil there maybe it's time to check more in detail your turbo ..

axle play and rebuild ..

Just drove a 110 km's back to Calgary and lost 1.5 liters of oil. The leak seems to be getting worse. The air filter is black with oil and the engine is now idling rough and the exhaust smells awful (kinda burnt). I just changed the oil from synth to Rotella 5W-30 thinking that could be a cause, but the new leaking oil is BLACK(?). Also, the blow by is not even getting to the oil canister, but leaking somewhere before. I appreciate your advice and will pull the turbo tonight and have a look. Probably send it out for a rebuild anyways. Hope it's the turbo as opposed to engine seals (?). I'll post as soon as I have it pulled and get a better look. Never worked on a diesel before so this turbo is a new experience. Thanks for the wisdom.

Sounds a bit strange that the air filter is getting oil in it, unless the compression is being blown back through the intake? What are the compressions like? Also being ex JDM, it could have had 2-300 thousand k's wound back off the speedo:grinpimp: so may actually be higher than you think. Good luck!

Turbo seals most likely. Very common on these trucks. They are not that hard to re-seal yourself if you have the time.

I might have the same problem - but the leak is not the much - just a drop or 2 on the breather hose and the hose from the air cleaner to the turbo is slightly moist with oil. But not dripping wet nor am I losing a lot of engine oil. Can I just replenish the lost oil? What harm does the oil on the breather/intake do on the engine?

I still need to look for a good mechanic to do my turbo. But I know I would have to get this done.

Yes ,just top it up like normal

.

None really, unless it becomes so bad the engine begins to run on engine oil and screams its way to death at 5000 rpm.
The amount of oil going back into your engine is miniscule compared to the amount of air and diesel being used.

Update: I sent the Turbo off to Jeff at ADP in Vancouver based on MUD reviews. He informed me that the internal housing was cracked and the bearings/seals were shot. Cause: excessive heat (which he told me was common with the C-26 turbo).

I gotta say my experience with ADP was great. Fast service even over the holidays. A "complete" rebuild was done to the tune $760, plus shipping. Not bad, considering I was having nightmares of rebuilding the engine. I hope the turbo failure is not a symptom of something else. I'll definitely be installing a pyro gauge.

I should get the turbo back tomorrow and will post some pic's of the failed parts. Quick question: The exhaust manifold gasket on the engine block looks to be in good shape, but should it always be replaced? I bought all new turbo gaskets from 4Wheel Auto, but forgot about this one. Also - should the manifold be cleaned? How?

If it wasn't for your guys advice - I'd probably be cursing the day..... So thank's - you guys rule!

If you have the chance/money to change the gasket .. go for it .. I don't do .. mine " looks " good and it's still there ..

Tapage - do you have a part number for this gasket? Is it the valve cover gasket that needs to be replaced? Easy job? Maybe send a pic so I tell how to replace and which one to replace.

thanks a lot to the forum for your advises.
