I picked up my rebuilt 96’ 1FZ-FE from the machine shop today. In discussing what all was done they told me that they “keyed oil pump drive the gear to the shaft”. Does anyone know what negative consequences if any this could have for the motor long term?

I’m pretty sure the reason the motor had an issue to begin with was that when repairing the leaking oil pump seal we didn’t torque the crank bolt correctly. Causing the oil pump to fail.

I was mildly surprised to find my 12ht was also not keyed, but took a few good whacks to seat it so it should work on it’s own, and with the added force from the pulley nut, it should be OK. Perhaps yours was a loose fit and the shop took some initiative?? Can you remember if it was a tight fit, or had it spun on the crank.
Are loose oil pump gears a regular Toyota problem???

I think they were just skeptical about the proper torque on the crank bolt torque being the only thing keeping it turning. The crank was fine only needed polishing. A couple of cylinders had some galling damage.
