I went ahead and bought the DVD from Idaho Doug. If anyone wants to mooch it from me just pm me. I have one coming up in the near future so if someone wants to get some free on-the-job-training I will keep you posted.

later, kief

I'd like to check out the job when you start :)

Which rig are you doing the HG on? Did you order all the parts from Cdan? What work are you having done on the block?

I'm very interested in seeing what you do as I'll probably end up doing this sooner or later myself.

I will burn the DVD next time we hookup. Wouldn't mind seeing some work either as I have contemplated doing this as PM.

HG?
No idea?...

Parts came from Wheeler, I haggle for good pricing. I will check with Cdan though and see how much what the total is with shipping.

This is the rig the FlyRod posted up on. It's cleaner than mine and has the lockers. I tried to catch up with T3 last weekend in the snow and realized how worthless an 80 on street tires and no lockers is. The rig with the bad HG has 220k. The 80 we're driving has 230k. Its going to get some oil leaks addressed, detailed, and whatever else I find while I am at it. Hopefully I don't have to do a HG on it before its sold!

Cdan has a few parts in his HG kit that the standard kit "forgot." I'd also read up on different things to do "while you're in there" (and Cdan can make some recommendations, something Wheeler can't do).

There's lots of things you could consider. Decking/shaving the head to gain some compression, boring out the cylinders (Toyota sells a +1-3 mm kit for that), etc. DON'T dip the block, there's an unobtanium bushing in it. Possibly replace the timing chain slippers as they tend to wear and the earlier 80's used a thinner/lighter setup that didn't last as long.

Robbie (Powderpig) basically rebuilds 1FZ's for a living, he's a great resource (or so I hear).

If you do bore out the cylinders and deck the head you'll end up with a 4.6 liter and a quite nice bump in HP. Down side is depending on how big you go you will knock off that many rebuilds (not that it seems people are typically needing to bore the cylinders anyway when they rebuild).

Have you dug around on the 80's forum for this? There's been some recent threads on it.

I've been pokin' around the 80's forum. This is a fix-what's broke project. I don't know the history of this vehicle and want to see what the overall condition is before I get a bunch of $$ and time into it. I try to be prudent and fix stuff that is likely to fail soon while accessible. I will check out the slipper but am happy with the 1fze power for now. This motor was well maintained and is very clean- indicating good oil and frequent changes.
Keep in mind I was driving a 93 sentra with almost 300k and now have a 22RE powered DD and my 84 FJ60 has the 2f with 160k--I'm not accustomed to the zip of the 1fZE, I did smoke a Saab on Oregon mountain once- wifey was scared. I don't what I would do with more power!

If not previously mentioned, another 'while you're there' item is the PHH. You WILL want to do that one.:D
