Hi guys,
So I have a 1996 HZJ75 with a 1FZ F engine and 5 speed transmission. And I am in the process of restoring a 1985 BJ75. The latter one has a better body and chassis than de HZJ with the swap.
I am going to swap engines and drivetrain between both of them, so I am guessing my best bet would be to swap the electrical harness, at least on the engine side. I believe there's not much else, except rear tail lights that I guess they are pretty much the same.
The question is. Can I keep the dashboard of my BJ with the 1 FZ. That dashboard has engine RPM, Oil pressure, Temp, Volts and Fuel. The one on my HZJ (with 1FZ) only has fuel and Temp.
Also, I would need to change my starter key I believe, because of the glow plugs on the diesel?
Any input or heads up on the swap will be appreciated.
Cheers

little confused on what engine you actually have? HZJ75 means it has a HZ diesel engine, unless it has had the gasser 1FZ installed at some time.
I have two troop carriers

1. 1985 BJ75 with the original engine (3B) currently undergoing a frame off restoration
2. 1996 J75 with a swapped 1FZ FE. Prevoious owner did that swap. This truck originally had a 1HZ engine.

So I’ve been checking both chassis, the one with the 1FZ and the BJ75. Main difference is the transmission crossmember location. What about engine mount location?
More doubts about the project, can I keep the BJ front and rear differentials? Should I swap the driveshafts?
What about steering? And brake booster?
Maybe I should just put the good body on the chasis with the 1FZ?
Any input will be appreciated
Cheers

Hello,

There were some changes in the 70 Series in the early 1990s, namely differential size (pre-1990 diameter is 9 1/2 in. if I remember correctly) and the position of some crossmembers. Engine mounts changed as well, to accommodate different power plants such as 1HZ and 1FZ.

BJ75's differential size may require modification of the oil sump with a 1FZ engine swap. Engine mounts may require fabrication. Transmission and transfer may need frame massaging to mount as well.

Regarding steering and brake booster, some parts remain the same, some do not. It is worth checking the parts catalog to determine which ones are necessary.

Oil pressure, temperature, voltage and fuel level can be made to work, but the tachometer signal from a 6 cylinder petrol engine is completely different from a 4 cylinder diesel and the tachometer will not work.

If your BJ ignition switch has a 'GLOW' position, you are probably best off using an FJ ignition switch.

There are adaptor modulators that convert the Hall signal from the diesel iterations to the gassers.

Hi guys, all replies appreciated. Sorry for the daly.
Any chance anyones has a chasis drawing with dimensiones for a BJ75 troop carrier and an FZJ75 troop carrier?

Regards

Hello,

From the FSM.

These diagrams refer to distances. However, they are drawn at scale and it should be possible to determine the position of the crossmembers.

3D distances for the 75 Series: FJ75, PZJ75, HZJ75.

2D distances for the 75 Series: : FJ75, PZJ75, HZJ75.

2D distances for the 75 Series: : FJ75, BJ75, HJ75, 1984-1989.

I have yet to find the data for an FZJ75.
