My buddies are in the middle of Missouri somewhere and their 1999 Land Cruiser is acting up. They brought to a mechanic who pulled off "something" to clear the codes and it ran fine for a while.

Intermittent no power, 4-low and it barely crawls, then goes away and all is good. When acting up, can't rev in park or neutral. Now CEL is on and won't start.

I realize this is very little info. He's going to try and find the codes from the mechanic on the receipt.

On my FJ80 (3FE), when I pull the EFI fuse for a while, it clears the codes. Does this work on the FJ100? Is there another fuse to pull and reset codes?

Thanks!

Joe

PS They're trout fishing and I was supposed to go, but broke my ankle. Ironic the guy who knows the most about vehicles got hurt and vehicle acts up.

Code are P0121 Throttle Position Sensor Switch
and P0120 GPS circuit problem.

I read through the FAQs, TPS or APPS. Looks like a simple fix, but they're out in the middle of no where.

I recommended resetting the codes (pull EFI fuse) and see how far they get. I wonder if I should recommend they find a mechanic tomorrow? Guess it'd be the safest way. If they can get the part, seems like a quick install.

Has anyone "limped" along with a bad TPS or APPS? Would you limp about 300 miles in the boonies so you could keep fishing and enjoy the weekend?

This limp happened to me in CO over the holidays one morning when it was -4F outside.
I cleared the code, let the engine warm up and it has not come back in 3 months now.:meh:

Not for certain on the 99, but on the 2000 the last 1/4 of pedal travel overrides the throttle by wire system. The pedal hits a spring at about 3/4 travel and resistance is 2x but at least you can drive. It feels like it hits a stop, but just push a little harder and it moves some more. You don't have to stand on it so if they feel like they're doing leg presses its not the same as on MY 2k.

As others have stated, they have either a sensor or stepper motor going out in the tbw system.

I also had the limp mode a couple times before I replaced it. The first two, I just shut off the vehicle, and restarted. Try the restart and/or pulling the battery cable as mentioned before, however I would just go straight to somewhere to get a replacement.

Thanks for the help. Guys.

Last night's Text to them:
Told them codes PO 120 and 121 are the throttle position sensor. Gave them a phone number and directions to a dealer in West Plains, MO. 30 miles away. Told them to take 1/2 day off from fishing and get it fixed. Should be a quick install and dealer should have it since it seems like it breaks often. Said if dealer didn't have it, find one at A-Zone and have another mechanic put it on.

Said, you could risk it and hope resetting it continues to work, but it's a risk!

"On da river"

Those idiots! So tonight they call. They called a parts place in Gainsville, MO who will get it in tomorrow. They are going to try to install themselves. These guys can't hardly open a mailbox without directions!

I'm going back to FAQ and see if I can find more info with pics on the install. Any recommendations?

Texted them everything I could find here. They got a TPS from O'Reilly, installed it, and seemed to fix the problem. Gotta love the MUD! Can't believe those idiots did it, but all is good!

They didn't catch many fish though, of course, I wasn't there to help them on which lures to use.

Thanks for the hospitality, back to the 80's series for me.

Joe
