I bought a 93 FZJ80 a few months ago after selling my 2000 LC and I have missed my 100 ever since I sold it. I bought my 80 to build and trail ride so I don't drive it every day. I've been driving my old 98 4runner as a DD and I'm tired of driving it because it's too small for me. I'm keeping the 80 and want a 100 for my DD, yes my wife thinks I have a problem. I found a 1998 100 series with 210,000 miles, same owner for the last 15 years, new timing belt service in the last 1000 miles and new valve cover gaskets. It's been serviced at the dealer every 3000 miles since she's owned it and she has all the records. It's dark gray river rock, factory rear diff locker, garage kept and the interior and exterior are in great condition for the age with no scratches or dents, leather is also in great shape. She's asking $8900, I offered $6500, I came up to $7000, and she won't budge off $8000. I think it's too high and I feel like $7000 would be a fair price. BTW, it's always been in the south, no rust, and has new tires. It's bone stock which is what I want for a DD. I would probably go up to $7500 but I don't want to go to $8000. Just curious what you guys think about the price? Is it worth $8000 or is $7000 to $7500 too high? I found a black 99 that looks good but will need a timing belt soon and I may be able to get it for $6700 but then I'm back up to $7500 or so after the TB service. It has 217,000 miles. Really would like to see what you guys think...................10ga

My two cents: sounds like it is worth what she's asking. I paid 11k for my 1998 and 174k miles with great service history and in excellent condition from a dealer. But overall, I've seen that cars in my town are higher than other markets. While I was shopping, I saw through wholesale auction websites (friend of a friend has dealer credentials) that 8k was about the going price for a comparable 100. And the auction meant you buy it without getting in the car first. I hope this helps.

Oh, and if other readers of this think that I overpaid for my 100, please don't tell me. I personally think it was worth it.

I think it's worth what you're willing to pay. The price doesn't seem too far off what I'd see around here. But if it's more than what you're willing to pay, then it's not the right truck.

Why don't you sell the 4Runner?

It has good history that makes it above average so the price reflects that. But miles and age of truck is why stuff breaks so cheaper is better.

Stay on it and offer what you're good with. How are the brakes and pedal feel? I'm sure you know 'bout that.:bang:

Maybe it's just me... but I plop down cash exactly what I'm willing to pay... I'm nice about it... and just say this $7300 cash is what I think is a very fair deal for both of us... I'd really like to have your truck... you might find someone who is willing to pay you more but they aren't as nice as me and I know exactly what i'm buying and I don't have to go to a bank to get the money which won't lend that much on this truck... wouldn't you just rather sell it to me and be done with it....
good luck

Assuming everything else is the same (service history, condition, etc etc), I would rather get a car that is cheaper but need the major/expensive work done, even at the end, the cost are about the same.

My reasoning, for TB, if I do it, I will get the TB, water pump, and the few other bits in there having everything done. I sleep better knowing which parts were replaced when ;). Also, depending when it is done, I can always delay a bit, so I can spread the cost. Same thinking with tires, and I like to purchase the warranty that come with brand new tires. My wife have had bad luck on tires. We got 2 free tires on our last SUV, so the warranty is worth it for us.

Just my 2c and good luck on your search!
Chris

As said by others, a lot of variables to consider.

For me:
-what is my time worth?
-how long does it take to find an acceptable vehicle in my price range?
-just walking around/looking under the vehicle, does it need work?
-has a windshield replacement been butchered? $$$
-if the one you are looking at has great history with repairs and fluids changed (not just oil changes), I'd pay $8k for a rust free truck like that.

These trucks kind of hit a bottom price at some point, regardless of miles. Good suggestion on the bring cash. I've unloaded vehicles for way less than asking to people that seemed cool and had green in hand. It's a hassle selling stuff to the general public, as an individual.

OP, i've been in the market as well and monitoring it for a while waiting for the right deal (I am looking for a 03-07 model though, but have looked at 98-02s). For as sorted as this truck sounds, with no rust and a recent TB change, new tires, 8k is a solid price.

Each local market is different, but from what you described 8k sounds like a fair price in this market and if I were here I would not budge from that number either. If its the cruiser you want is it worth the risk of losing it over a thousand bucks? IMO my time is worth more than that so I would pay it if its the cruiser I want. Best of luck in your purchase.

Damn, you guys are talking me into it. I'm going to throw out $7500 and see what happens. If no bites, I'm going to pull the trigger. The rig is very solid and when I get finished with my 80 build, this would be a great rig to start another build on. My wife looks at me like I'm crazy for buying another LC but we almost have all the kids out of the house so she needs another kid to roll her eyes at. Thanks for all the opinions, much appreciated

Why don't you sell the 4Runner?

4Runner is gone if I get the 100. It's a one owner out of Atlanta with 205,000 miles, 4x4, and new tires, should be easy to sell this time of year.

I just bought a 99 for $8600 with 155K and timing belt and water pump changed at 135K I felt good about it but its also my first one so I may have jumped the gun...

I know that's hard for you. I still walk out in the driveway every morning and have to decide if I drive the LX or my 3rd gen. So many differences, but I love my 3rd gen.

I agree 100% I've owned a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Gen and the 3rd is by far my favorite. Besides 1st gens, there's no known issues and I just like the way they look.

Sounds like a great find.

Update: Still negotiating with the little old lady from North Carolina. I made my $7500 offer but she's stuck at $8000. I said I was going to pull the trigger at $8000 but I think I'll wait her out and if she sells it, I'll keep looking. I'm not in a hurry so if I get it, that's great, if not, I will find another one. I wished I could find one that was a little built and I'm willing to pay the extra money for it if I do. I know what it cost to add lifts, racks, tires, and bumpers and I think you can usually buy something built cheaper than you can do it.

Visit the little old lady from NC with cash in hand............$7500. I am sure she will take it. Find something that is wrong with truck and tell her it will take at least $500 to repair so you will be even.

If I were selling, I wouldn't. When I set my minimum price, that is my minimum price. You showing up with less than that doesn't suddenly make it look better. If anything it pisses me off that you wasted my time with an offer I already rejected.

Don't play these games. You've been told it is a fair price and she's sticking to her guns. Tell her your offer stands if she changes her mind, but otherwise move on. You're clearly not willing to pay a fair price for a nice vehicle...so wait and see if that steal of a deal comes around. Be prepared to wait quite a while for it. Those deals don't come around often and when they do, you need to be ready to pounce.

^this would be me too if I were selling. Personally, if you show up with $7500 after I already told you twice before that my minimum was $8k, I'm either raising my minimum price or just outright not selling to you because you didn't deserve to own my vehicle.

I agree with the 2 posts above.

Can someone explain the logic of showing up with $500 less than the minimum asking price "in cash". I had someone do that with me on the last car I sold, then he started whining about how he didn't have a ride home and "I had to take it". I offered to call a cab for him.

I wasn't planning on financing it for anyone, and I'm not taking a personal check. Was I supposed to swoon at seeing all that cash in one place?

In my case, I was selling a "toy" and even if the guy had magically "found" the missing $500, I wasn't going to sell it to him after that BS!
