I have a '98 taco, non-trd,4x4, 2.7l manual trans. What size is my third member? Is it the old Toyota 8"? -or- The newer 8.4"? Also is my front third the same as the older IFS 7.5" ?

The front is a 7.5" ring gear but, the thrid is not the same as the early ifs. If the rear is non elocked it is what is called an 8.4". If it is elocked then it is a regular 8" also called a 4cyl. third.

your front is an HP reverse rotation 7.5" diff. clamshell design drivers drop. different than the previous generation 86-95 style LP standard rotation diff. rear is 8.4 as the above post mentions. unless you have the elocker which is the standard 8" toy rear diff, tacomas all have the 8.4" diff.

A 3rd gen 4runner has an 8" whether open or locked right? I wonder why they used an 8.4 in the Taco, but not in the heavier 4runner?

As far as I understand the 8.4 is only in the US market. Tacoma, t100. The 4runner 8" is used all over the world in Prados, Hilux, Hilux surf etc.
