I hear you about the parking brake buddy! It is your drive axle flange in the front. Remove the center cap from both wheels and you should be able to see the end of the cv shaft spinning within the cap when you put it in drive with the center diff unlocked. It would be a good idea to apply the parking brake first for safety when checking this (although the parking brake levers are probably stuck and ineffective like the majority of landcruisers out there) . The passenger front drive flange cup went bad on mine and caused the exact same thing to my 2000 landcruiser. Not really that big of a deal to fix. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I know all about this repair.
Check your drive flanges. It sounds like they may of sheared a few splines...they transfer the power from the CV axle to the tire (located under the dust cap on the front wheel hub)
Diff went kaboom........, pop the caps off your front drive flanges and see if the circlips are still in place.
This happened to me a couple of years ago. Hub flange and half shaft were replaced. Wasn't cheap, but it was much cheaper than a transmission.
If the front Diff or cv broke, I would think the rear axle would still move the truck.
