hold the phone. What if they just overheated it and blew a head gasket? Has anyone done compression/leak down test or tried to start it? ( do this after you buy it)

From what the owner told me, they turned the truck off after it started making a lot of racket. A little while later, they tried starting it again, to no avail.
They had it towed to the local Toyota dealership who told them they needed a new engine. Now, I know every service center is wrong from time to time, but I doubt they'd missed that one.
I'd be surprised if it were just a head gasket.

Assuming this deal happens and you get a replacement engine, and also assuming the engine failure was down to loss of coolant/WP failure:
- replace ALL coolant hoses and clamps
- remove the radiator and have that cleaned/pressure tested before using it
- If the engine comes from a wrecker, consider replacing WP, TB and pulleys before installing it.
Sounds like a great deal if it comes together.

This project is well under way! Final purchase price was $2k!

Cause of previous engine failure- failed heater hose T fitting, followed by loss of coolant, followed by continued driving, followed by lots of noise. Engine looks fine from the outside, but the inside of the intake is covered in oil.

I'll start a new thread and link these two together with my documentation of the process of doing an engine swap!

Wow. That's a crazy price; even with the blown motor!

I'll be following your updates.
