The stock stereo in my 1994 Land Cruiser is missing the bass/treble knob. I posted in the WTB section looking for the knob. I received a reply to purchase a complete radio. It turns out the radio that was offered is different than mine. Can someone chime in with some facts/details please. I'm wondering if the other radio is in fact an 'upgrade' from mine and if so, is it a plug-and-play swap. What about anti-theft? Thanks in advance!

I don't have an answer on your Q, but your replacement radio is same with mine , I have a 94 fzj80 the CD is faulty so if your planning on selling the replacement radio I would be gladly to buy it , thanks.

I can't speak to the technical questions, but the replacement radio you have is the same as the factory radio in my 1994.

x3 on the replacement radio being the same in my '94. I wonder why your original is different than all of ours?
I have not had my '94 apart, BUT, my 90 HDJ has the same dash (HVAC controls, switches etc all the same as my '94) IIRC, the HDJ stereo had 3 big plugs at the back (the factory stereo looked the same as an FZ).

It really isnt too big a job to pull the stereo out. You just have to be patient. Takes about an hour.

Do you have the replacement in hand?

Just to remove all doubt the replacement stereo in your second picture is what my '94 looks like as well.

I personally would not bother with a stock replacement because they are junk and 17 years old
Unless you want the stock look which is fine I guess.
You are better off putting in an aftermarket head unit if you like to enjoy music in your 80 the stock head unit and speakers just dont cut it anymore

That radio will plug right in. If you want a newer, better, radio and want to stick with Toyota I would go with a scion unit or a 4runner unit.

Interesting... Can you elaborate?

The one that you have right now looks like a Camry stereo. Your replacement stereo is the oem for '94LC80.

For the scion unit, you'll have to search--I have not done it, but lots of folks have. On my old 94, I put in a unit out of a 01 or so 4runner--plugged right into the factory plug, sounded better, worked with the factory amp, same toyota green lighting, worked with the dimmer switch etc. Camry and Taco radios work too, just make sure you get one with the green backlighting as they come in red and amber as well.

I'll see if I can dig up the part number for the green radio...

here is what I posted a couple years back. The reason this one works better is that it has a built in amp, rather than having to mount another one like I did in the 94...

Doug, the radio from a 2000 era camry with faceplate ID AD16814 will plug right in, has green backlighting, plays cassettes and burned CDs, and cost less than 50 bucks on ebay....

I replaced my 94 radio with a Scion unit.
This is from memory.
There was a couple of thread's on this a few years ago. Maybe do a search.
Had to trim the bezel to make it fit.
You have to un-plug the amp next to the passenger foot well.
If I can remember you use the spare gray connectors behind the radio instead of whats plugged to the existing radio.

Good luck.

I am SOOOO confused. I used my favorite research tool, eBay, to look at hundreds of Toyota radios and I think I have determined that what is in my car is a 1996 Camry radio.

NOW WHAT...

Is the Camry radio better that the stock 1994 LC radio?
Do I have a amp somewhere in my car? (I know there is a small amp co-located with the single rear subwoofer.)

What about anti-theft on all these used OEM radios?

I'm just looking for something quick and cheap for now. An OEM plug-and-play would be my first choice. I would really like to have something with AUX input for my iPhone. I've seen OEM radios on eBay for less than $1!

Yes, I had that same radio in my '95 Camry. I believe it was used in multiple Toyota models, but not LAnd Cruisers.

For what it's worth, I just went to a couple Goodwill stores until I found a deck with the correct knobs. I bought the stereo for like $3 pulled the knobs I needed and walked around back and donated the stereo back to them. Got a tax deductible receipt for the $200 value factory OEM stereo I so generously donated too.:grinpimp:

My 94 Land Cruiser has a similar radio. The top looks the same but the bottom is a little different. And it is missing the volume knob.
