I finally brought myself to sell my FJ80. The motivating consolation is that I will use the proceeds to purchase a Toyota PU , the second most reliable vehicle known to man. The only two reasons I want to sell it is for 1) something with better mileage to drive when it's too cold, wet, bumpy for the motorcycle; and 2) a bed that I can clean with a garden hose.
Some of you may know the previous owner, Lee Petersen. He purchased the truck near 100k miles, and I took over ownership at approx. 150k mi.
I admit it's less than ideal to post this without pictures and more details, but I need to start moving or I'll happily hold on to it forever. I also figure those who are truly interested will ask for more details, which I will happily provide (good or bad). I intend to clean and photo this weekend, then post.
THE BAD (in the non-particular order of my recollection):
Thank you for your interest,
Ian

THE BAD (in the non-particular order of my recollection):
- Front aluminum body bits dinged up and paint chipped
- Hood very slightly bent (I ever so nicely rear-ended a Ford Expedition last winter. Only the cosmetics and my ego were damaged)
- Rear main seal leak (drips every start/stop, looks like it should require replacing oil periodically, but have never had to add oil between changes – no I did not simply ignore it and not replace it so I could say that. I really did check it between changes for several changes.)
- Power steering leaks, does require periodic refilling (still use fully synthetic tranny oil)
- Wiper fluid motor failed
- AC needs refilling/servicing – and still uses R12. Last refilled two years ago by a friend who still had a stash of R12. I’ve been told the seals are ceramic and as long as AC is used often, the seals won’t leak. When I did refill it, it would last two years. But I would assume since I haven’t refilled it in the last two years (I’m too cheap to drive with AC – I usually ride a motorcycle to work) the seals will surely need to be replaced.
- Rear door and hood struts don’t work well in winter.
- Rear passenger windows roll slow
- One of the license plate bulbs won’t work.
- Since it’s white, it’s not obvious, but when the sun reflects just so, you can tell the paint is fading
- Bearing on front of motor needs replacing... someday? It started last January, but has never worsened. It only squeaks when the motor is hot and at 3000 RPM. I’m not convinced that it’s ready to go yet, so I haven’t bothered with it.
- Zero rust.
- Only a mere 207k miles! : >
- Injectors rebuilt and synchronized by Witchhunter in Washington (I have record of who this was - just need to find...)
- Wiring harness under plenum replaced and protected (from cooking again)
- Radiator replaced w/ new Genuine Toyota radiator @ 150k
- All diffs’ oil replaced at 100k
- Tranny oil flushed w/ fully synthetic oil @ 150k
- Jacobs fully electronic ignition coil
- Interior pretty clean (smudges here and there)
- Starts and runs like new.
- Birfields replaced at 150k.
- Always kept fully synthetic motor oil since ownership (100k) w/ Mobil1, Purolator, or Wix premium filters
- K&N air filter, woohoo!
- Water pump and alternator replaced @ 125k
- Oil sump gasket replaced @ 150k
- Rotors replaced @ 150k
- Aftermarket full size radio, CD, tape, supposedly XM radio capable (from several years back)
- Aftermarket Eclipse speakers in doors.
- Rod gallery gasket replaced @ 175K
- Power steering flushed with fully synthetic tranny oil @ 150k
- Always kepts ujoints & birfields greased (every other oil change)
- All things electronic still work
Thank you for your interest,
Ian
