Hi there I got a 91 FJ80 and wanted to upgrade the rear drums to disc brakes, my first question would be if there's really a big difference overall with the upgraded rear brakes? I was wondering how much work would the upgrade imply and what parts would I need for the project? I've heard about kits but would prefer doing the work with original toyota parts if possible, im pretty sure it would be cheaper that way but any suggestions and help are more than welcome, thanks. :grinpimp:

You'd have to swap out the axle completely, throw in the e-brake cable from a 1993+ (and possibly the master cylinder) but it's doable.

I did this swap on my 91 and basically it's not hard to do. I did the swap when I lifted the truck so no biggy. It's a complete swap, no mods.
1st: you will need a complete FF rear axle(hand brake cable too)
2nd: you will have to upgrade your 15" rims to 16" or larger
3rd: you just swap it in.

Make sure you have all the materials and tools to perform the job. Get some buddies and buy some bruskies to make the job interesting. Good luck and enjoy.

While I would eventually like to have a FF rear end
I like the simplicity of my SF
Plus I can run 15's

I have the best of both worlds. FF rear axle and JDM 15" Work rims

Thanks for all the helpful info guys I definitely appreciate it. I was wondering how much would it cost me to get the axle and everything else that I need? I've heard that the axle alone runs for about $500 - $700 and found these guys that sell a new axle for about $850 Diamond Axles - Rear/Non-Steering Axles Im wondering which would be the best option? and finally is there really a big difference overall with the upgraded braking system on the rear axle?

Your best option would be to find a good rear axle from a junkyard 80. As for swap benefits, you'll most likely see a good increase in braking power if the system is in good shape, but I think the biggest benefits would be simply in not having to rebuild drum brakes.

Nicely said. I'd rather work on a FF, than a SF any day. 2x on the junk yard or classifieds on mud. This is how it will look like:

I did the drum to disc conversion that is offered on Spector OffRoad. Braking power is increased BUT with no ABS it can lock and slide when you slam the brakes.
you do have to open the diff so buy some diff oil.
