Hi all I've got an fj62 and have noticed recently my battery meter pegging. So checking the alternator I see what's seems to be a modified electrical system. The alternator did not have a voltage regulator on it but I find this external one that is putting out 18vdc. It should be 13.5 right?

I will check with auto shop but the Alternator that is currently in there is an OEX brand RXA408 (aftermarket). I am not even sure that this Alternator has internal voltage regulation.
At present the Battery measurements (measured "as is" and under load (where I turn everything I can on)
Engine@Idle: 14.3-14.5v
Engine@1000RPM: 17.28v
Engine@1500RPM: 17.58v
Load@1500RPM: 13.7v
Load@Idle:12.7v

been checking online: If I need to, I will replace with: TOYOTA LANDCRUISER FJ62G 12V 80AMP DENSO ALTERNATOR ENGINE- 3F, 3FE

Yeah 13.5 is around right, mine was all over the board so I just replaced the entire alternator, the voltage regulator's price on its own didn't make it worth it.

I found VRs for the fj62 at the rebuilders shop for about 35 bux. had the whole oem unit remanned with new rectifiers, brushes, regulator and bearings for 150 out the door. same price as a new aftermarket- much better deal. guys had it done in a day. I recommend having parts rebuilt, not replacing them with questionable brand new garbage...I was hoping this thread was a write up for how to properly install an external reg...oh well. you might be needing a new battery bfore too long...

How do I rig up an alternator and external regulator .. someone changed it to 2 wire Alternator that doesn't work
