I'm selling off my Land Cruiser LJ70 because I'm leaving Canada, moving to Europe, and probably never coming back. Asking price: $11,000.00 CAD and a case of beer.
This unit is in spectacular condition, and every single one of the vehicle's original design flaws has been corrected.
It’s been upgraded with an aftermarket head (Source: AllHead, Australia) made from a special alloy that doesn’t crack. The new head looks like a much heavier casting than the original Toyota part, and it has a vacuum purge system to prevent gas pockets and thermal stress. Changing the coolant is an enjoyable experience. You just open the purge valve and pour it right in -no bleeding required.
The stock radiator has been replaced with a custom-built unit (Source: City Radiator, Calgary) that’s 50% larger, greatly improving heat dissipation. The new radiator has a filler port, as well as temperature sender ports on the top and bottom tanks for monitoring its efficiency.
I also installed a high-flow thermostat and an upgraded water pump. The engine will never, ever overheat in normal use. I've run it end-to-end on Deerfoot Trail at 120kph on a 30C day, just to check.
The unit also has a brand new clutch, and every gasket in the engine has been changed.
The turbocharger on this vehicle has been completely rebuilt, every moving part replaced with top of the line components (Source: Melett, UK) and final balance by Alamo Calgary. It measured 0.000093 G at 110,000rpm. I also replaced the turbine housing with a brand new casting, just to be sure. This might be the best rebuild ever done on a CT20 diesel turbo; I'm in the process of writing a book on it.
Since the number one thing that reduces engine life is poor oil quality, I fitted this vehicle with a dual channel bypass oil filtration system (Source: Amsoil, Canada) and loaded it with premium synthetic oil. This is the same oil filtration system used on semi-trailers and industrial earth moving equipment. It extends the oil change interval to 25,000 km from the usual 5,000km, depending on how and where you drive. All of the other fluids in the vehicle have been upgraded to synthetic as well.
Starting a diesel engine in the winter sucks. Especially if it doesn’t have a block heater. Most Land Cruisers don’t have block heaters because its extremely difficult to install one after the vehicle arrives in Canada.
I designed and installed a custom 1500W engine pre-heat system on this vehicle. It uses an immersion heater and an electric pump to circulate hot coolant through the engine block before starting, taking it from -30C to +90C in less than an hour. The vehicle starts instantly in the coldest weather; and because the system heats all of the coolant in the engine, the cab heat works from the moment you turn the key …no warm-up required.
The stock radio in this unit has been replaced with a high-end touchscreen entertainment system that does practically everything imaginable. It can read CD’s and DVD’s, and has two memory card slots. It can play MP3’s and WMA files stored on any of the above media, and it can also connect directly to an iPod via a docking cable in the vehicle’s glove box. The unit has a powerful built-in GPS system with a roof-mounted antenna. It can also receive television broadcasts, and can display video from a back-up camera right on the screen.
Again, the only reason I’m selling this vehicle is because I’m leaving Canada in a few months and I’m probably not coming back. Good as this vehicle is, it’s not worth thousands of dollars in shipping costs to get it to its new home; especially if I end up in a city where a vehicle isn’t necessary.
This Land Cruiser is a solid, reliable, and fuel-efficient vehicle that will deliver dependable performance for years to come. Properly maintained, it shouldn’t need any major work for over 100,000 kilometers.
