Hey everyone! First time poster here. I have a 1988 fj62 with 145k original miles and believe that my truck is in need of "newer" air flow meter. I replaced the air hose lines and she is still dying out when I step on the gas. It also smells as if she is burning rich. Any ideas, thoughts, and/or suggestions would be greatly welcomed. Cheers.

Are you getting any check engine light codes? If the check engine light is on you can pull the codes.

Dying out when stepping on the gas could be an indication of a vacuum leak. How is the idle?

Have you tested your MAF per the FSM?

Do you have a copy of the manual? You are diving into diagnosis that could save you a lot of money instead of buying another one.

message me your email address and I'll link you to the one on my dropbox that you can download.

I had a similar issue where the engine would stumble when I stepped on the pedal. It wouldn’t die, but it would not accelerate for several seconds and then it would kick back in. This happened intermittently so it was difficult to diagnose and I didn’t get any codes. I eventually replaced my air flow meter and it solved the problem. This part is no longer available, but I ended up buying one for a 93’ Camry V6 from Rockauto. It is the exact same form factor and I have been running solid since.

Excellent advice!!! Can’t thank ya enough. Do you happen if any other Camry years will fit or just the 93’? Cheers.

I think 92-94’ will work. I purchased a Cardone 7420070 for about $90. It is a reman., but it beats paying about $700 for a new OEM.

Interesting, I did not know camry MAFs fit cruisers.

I may have a similar issue. running rich. No codes. getting like 7mpg. Sooty plugs but no black exhaust. When she’s on the highway she’s responsive. Changed fuel filter, ran fuel pressure changed fpr, changed O2. Tested air flow except for air temp and the one test that required produced a wave formation. Small vacuum leak at intake at times (leanish).

Will the Camry AFM get you same results as a spec 3FE?
