Does the t-case come off in one piece or several? We are having a lot of trouble trying to split the t-case from the auto tranny. I can't find anything in this useless manual of mine.

What "useless manual" are you working from. I have a 1987 BJ74 transfer case and I used the Toyota Service Manual to reference my tear down, I found it covered the process quite throughly.
The transfer case has internal bolts holding the back case of the transfer assembly to the transmission, you need to split the case and remove the parts to get access to the bolts.

Good luck

remove the driveshafts
drain t/case AND tranny.
remove the input nut and bearing.
remove PTO (or cover plate) drive box.
remove all 14 mm bolts and 17 mm bolts holding the 2 halves together.
remove the shifter rod (at the top)
remove any wiring to the back half.
remove back half, watch since the idler gear and parts will want to fall onto the ground
remove input gears
remove 17 mm bolts holding the front half to the tranny
that should be it...

nice to hear you still have the old girl.

Thanks for the help guys. Got it all out now and ready to re-install but I'm waiting on the mount that goes to the cross member. If you thought it was a PITA getting parts for a BJ74 in Canada, try a BJ74 with auto trans. It looks like I'll have to wait for the part to come from either Japan or down under. To top that off, my "complete" transfer case rebuild kit doesn't include 2 split bearings that are specific to a t-case for an auto. Looks like she'll be parked for at least a couple more weeks.

I'm not sure what the bearings are called. Here are a few pics.

kinda looks like the adapter shaft between the tranny and the t/case .. no?
if so then that part will be part of the tranny assembly ... no?
