I have been tearing into my new project (87-FJ60) and have noticed that the current config is that the power steering (PS) pump is not connected to any type of a cooler (which is different from my 80).

The PO has replaced the rad with an OEM and I noticed it has a hookup for what looks like either a tranny cooler or PS pump built into the radiator. The truck has the h42 so it was not needed for the tranny. However, the lines line up real good for use by the PS.

Was a there a cooler on the PS originally and did he just bypass the cooler?

In my 86 fj60 there is no ps cooler.
From what I understand the 62 and 60 rads only differ in that one has a tranny cooler and one does not. SOmeone will chime in and confirm this. THe PO might of found a deal on a 62 Rad and just put it in.

I'm sure someone with more experince will fill you in.

Good Luck

Patrick

no power steering cooler on a stock 60/62 that we are aware of but not a bad idea ....useing the rad./tranny cooler would keep the ps fluid around the same temp as your motor ......i would think you would lile to see it cooler just add one up front of the rad ......................... cando john

Yeah, that was my next question....Is that going to be too hot running for the PS fluid (it lines up so darn pretty) and is it going to be too low so that the PS fluid will have to overcome to much head pressure (It is probably less than 4-5 inches lower than the steering box). I do not want the pump to work too hard or get too hot. I will be running snythetic atf...?

On the 60/62 there is a long, narrow, u-shaped hard line that's routed on top of the frame and buried under the radiator. This line serves as the cooler.

Now that I look closer, I think you are correct sir.

The PO must have bypassed the cooler when it leaked... Do not know how it got much air though??? It is tucked in tight under the rad. It does not look like it will be easy to get out either w/o taking out the complete radiator/shroud/grill. It looks like I have found an easy place to mount an aftermarket cooler that will get plenty of air though.

Thanks for all the help...I know my 80 well but still learning the 60.
