Help!! If someone knows h55s... trans won’t shift into 5th. Every other gear feels great and shifts smooth but you get to 5th and it’s a brick wall. I pulled the 5th gear extension and resealed, but put the faith gear fork back in place and reinstalled my detent ball on the side. This is a new h55. I have never done this before and could very likely have screwed the pooch. Any help would be appreciated. I’m dreading pulling all this out....

So, @wngrog and I tackle this job today with some help from @USMC22. I am solely responsible for the rebuild and mating of the split. Everything went off with no problems except the above.....they also installed some iron man foam cell pros for me while I was messing with trans and tcase. They are amazing.

Help is right. What a kick in the nuts

The immediate answer is...the lever was not installed correctly into the slot for 5th during reinstallation. Since the rest of the trans shifts smoothly and that is separate from the 5th gear extension housing and 5th is the issue, you need to remove the t-case to inspect what was reassembled incorrectly. Unfortunate since the t-case has to be disassembled but there is no other way to view inside the 5th gear housing.

5th can be a little rough but not a brick wall by any means. This will need to me removed :(

That's why i shift them on the workbench after the first half of the split case is installed to hold the 5th-gear housing tight. Did you remove the 5th gear housing to put sealant on the gasket? It sounds like you don't have the lever installed right. It can be kinda tricky

Don’t y’all think he can raise this thing back up on my lift and rebuild it while keeping the whole thing stabbed into the motor?

Trying to find a bright side here ......

If you can get a ratchet on the bolt for the 5th gear selector and simultaneously ensure its aligned again against the tunnel, then yes. Far more difficult, just requires a lot more patience.

Considering how it's already in place, it's worth a shot to try and reach without removing trans again.

sure you could but why would you do that instead of dropping it out and doing it on the workbench?

I did remove for sealant. Swore the 5th gear fork was slid in correctly. This is my first one guess you live and learn. Doesn’t look like there’s an easy fix here.

No idea. Never done one. It just seems like it would be easier.

To get it on the work bench it has to have both Shafts removed. Shift linkage removed.

Tranny pulled. Tranny removed from tranny jack.

Added to cart. Moved from shop to bench. Lifted up from cart to table.

Fixed.

Moved from table to cart.

Cart to shop.

Cart to engine hoist.

Hoist to tranny jack.

Installed. Shift linkage added.

Drive shafts added.

This is why I ask if he can fix it while it’s in the truck.

I guess i just don't see pulling an H55f out and in as a big deal. especially when you have that nice lift and jack.

I've messed this up too I just check it before I assemble the splitcase.

I have never built a split case so I’m trying to make this Less painful for me and Dustin.

I am wondering why it can’t be done on the transmission. Totally seems like a no brainer to me

See steps above. All that is work versus disassembling it piece by piece while it hangs off the H55 IN the truck.

Culprit found... don’t ask me what I did, but it looks like I wasn’t paying attention and spring went in before detent ball on 5th gear housing . She went back together pretty easy. Longest part was cleaning off the gaskets...

@wngrog was a huge help again. We got it stabbed and she is rolling. I am pro 5th gear. I was about to peg speedo but had to exit and it’s off slightly.

Now that’s she’s rolling a big shout out to @orangefj45 for the parts and help too. Rear 60 full float built out with a harrop locker, front oem lsd , and my split case and rebuild kit all came from Georg!

@wct49 hooked me up with a sweet set of RCVS! @wngrog @USMC22 came in clutch with the knowledge and labor to help get all this done and @maxbob002 came in helping rebuild the lsd I snagged from Georg.

Thanks fellas!

Good on Ya...but quick question for future reference.

I see you pulled it and fixed it on the bench...what’s your opinion on the easiest way to do this...pull it like you did and work on the bench or try to do this underneath and still on the truck?

Could not be done in truck correctly. Trust me, I really wanted him to be able to. It took me 90 minutes to get it ready to pull. Another hour to get it on the bench and then about 2 hours to get back into the truck.

Put in a little work today hauling an old m100 to the house.
