Progress Report:

The body work is mostly done. We reassembled the panels loosely to take it to the paint shop. We're going with the original blue with a clear coat on top. The bumpers and wheels will be matte black. I know this is a departure from the original but that's the way it's going to be. I'm not going for an entirely authentic restoration. There will be some compromises for aesthetics and comfort!

We still have to source a power steering unit and fit a new suspension. We have to take a decision on the seats. A local shop wanted €500 to upholster the originals which seems kind of pricey to me. I'm not sure where we're going to go with this yet.

We ran into a hitch with the reconditioned alternator -- it didn't work but we got a new one. We've also got a leaky water pump that has to be sorted out before it goes on the road.

By the way, those are not the original wheels in the pics.

I like the old and new Land Cruisers together here.

I haven't yet but I will if only to satisfy everyone else as to what exactly this thing is!

Yes. Check out the classic section of donedeal.ie (not dot com).

Edit for Tonka: I think I just decoded your location. You're in NI, right? The "gday" greeting threw me off!

Yep youre right im in the north. i was out working in oz and that was when i got me first 40 series. ive been looking for years for one in ireland though.

Belated thanks for the info about donedeal. Belated cos i always forget to suscribe to the threads i post on, on Mud and then forgettin i posted anything.

anywho, i found donedeal myself and just this week have found a BJ40 in similar condition to yours (rear quarter panels, rear sill, water pump) indeed we "done a deal" i put a deposit down. the rego book has it first registered in 1984 in ireland but the actually build date going by the chaisis number is i think is 1982.

i was at Lusk/fingal vintage show a few weeks back and got talking to this fella, told me he had a few 40series. turned out he lived a matter of a 5 minute drive from the one i bought on donedeal. so i visited him when i was down there.

he has 2xbj40s, 1xLJ70, 1xWillys jeep all in mint restored condition. he aint into the internet though but has a photo album full of local landcruisers.

apologies to all you Mudders out there, i know y'all like pictures but, but i think ive lost my camera in the back of the HJ75.

heres 2 photos of the one i got of donedeal...
Its a lot worse in the flesh. that rear panel is bludged out with rust, i think the paint is holding it together!

I'm sure I saw that red one posted. My Dad has been managing my rebuild project while I'm packing things up in the US. I'll be back in Ireland from November. I wanted to buy another vehicle to restore but I think it would kill my old man.

The blue one is getting close to completion. However, as the bling goes on I can't resist the urge to replace stuff that orginally I thought would be okay but now looks old compared to the new parts, window rubbers, hinges etc. At some point soon I'm going to have to call a halt and stop throwing money at it.

By the way the plan is for a bunch of us (currently two Landrover Defenders and myself) to take an overlanding trip to Morocco from Ireland in March/April 2011. If you get that red beast on the road by then you're welcome to come along. It will be about 16 days round trip, Cork to the Atlas Mountains.

Looking great man, the rig is definitely and '83+ because of the dash insert ;) Guess what's throwing me off is every '84 I've seen has been an "LX" with the triple wipers etc. Nice looking rig either way and that sounds like an excellent break in trip

Off topic (but this is my thread!) here's my wheeling machine here in North Carolina. 2006 Nissan Xterra OR.

And that's me just before I sat the thing almost upright on its tail and bent up some of the hardware. Dummy.

From the same wheeling trip, here's a yellow FJ pulling a Bronco out of a waterhole. After seeing this I went and bought my blue one to restore. And I've been much poorer since.

By the way, if the yellow FJ pilot is on here please give me a shout. I'd like to see your rig in close up. I took these shots at Uwharrie last year.

hehe

i am about to embark on a european/north african trip in my aussie Troopie. No set schedule, but buying this BJ40 may have delayed departure. Going around the scrap yards of europe looking for parts at least gives me a mission as opposed to wandering around aimlessly.:)

16 days round trip to Morroco looks like a lot of highway driving! ive recently done Clare/Kerry/Limerick/Cork in that time and still feel i need another 2 weeks exploring to appreciate it better.

today im decking out the back of the troopie to make it more camper friendly. this week im off to Mayo, with a week to kill showing an english mate around. i think we'll head for Sligo/Donegal/Derry/Antrim/Belfast. the weather should be good, the sun was splitting rocks yesterday.

i'll leave you with a shot of the troopie beside a bog machine in the midlands...

Hello Sean and Tonka,

I live in Holland and have 2 40 projects on hand.
I did some searching for parts arround here and found some suppliers for fenders and stuff.

http://www.rv4wd.nl/ is one of them. They claim to have OEM front fenders from Toyota. They sell all parts for the body (not all OEM) I haven't used them yet but visited them and what was in stock looked ok.
It is EU so there should only be transport.

Hope you can work with this.

hello sean . ive been doing some research on panels and came across this on Coolcruisers of texas website.

Any more news on Morroco? I dont think i'll have the red wagon onthe road by then but the White Elephant is more than capable for Morroco. I've just driven to the top of Europe in it and am now in Oslo heading south.

Ah, good find, Tonka. That would explain why I thought the panels didn't fit properly.

Morocco is still scheduled for last week of March and first two of April. Approximately.

My truck is back on the road. Yeaah! I will post some updated pics as soon as the new tires go on.

Were you in Nordcap in Norway? How was it? I've seen some cool pics of that place with snow piled up a couple of meters either side of the roadway.

i was at nordkapp. it was desolate. tourist season is over up there. Like the Cliffs of Mohar theres a bloody pay carpark at it. 28quid!!! but the place was closed so i had the place to meself. i raced up the coast of Sweden to get there before the snows legally i shoulda had snow tyres on. i only encountered snow for a bout 40km at the Arctic circle. Trying to sleep in minus 7 though wasnt comfy. Im back in ireland for a break from my travels. nto sure weather to drive to sunnier clims or get a job in the alps in ski resort.
I came across a 89euro ticket from rosslare to cherbourg. and i went from there to Buschtaxi Treffen in Germany . were there heaps of BJ40s.. heres some pics...

What i want mine to look like when its finished. note tinted rear windows

My favourite Buschtaxi at the show. (Buschtaxi is the name the germans give to expedition equipped landcruisers, ive only ever heard that term in Germany, they reckon its African.)

something about non toyota colours on 40series. they always get a second look by me. this photo doesnt show it to well , but i do like the chocolately dung colour. thats a Pop top roof on this one. oh yeah the modular wheels i like too. i normally run white 7spoke.
