1980s Specialized Stump Jumper Expert Needed (1 Viewer)

Hey guys...need some help identifying the year of my bike. Bought this a number of years ago from someone in the film industry who used it as a prop for a commercial or film. I'm leaning towards 1986, but not certain. Been down rabbit holes on mountain bike forums, but so many intricacies I figured I'd ask here since the LC crowd knows what's up.

No...I did search around a bit more after posting. Found a pretty comprehsive spec sheet through 1982...pretty confident it's a 1987.

Not a Specialized expert, but shimano m730 group is 1986-1993. So assuming that XT grp is original, then 1986 would be the oldest it could possibly be.

sounds about right. I worked in a bike shop in 1990, and Stumpjumpers had long since abandoned the chainstay u-brake by then, as well as the gusseted frame. I'd guess 86/87 ish.

Not an expert, but old enough to remember staring at my custom order Brodie frame on the wall of the bike shop waiting impatiently for the first shipment of Deore XT with SIS to hit canada. It was worth the wait, lol.

I can't swear to it, but I think by later '87 Shimano moved away from the "shark fin" to the "shark tooth", which was mounted directly to the U brake.

You could also try to decipher when they switched from 4 finger brake levers to 2, but I think you've got it dialled pretty close already. No earlier than 86 and no later than 87 I figure. Cool bike.

1987 was peak ubrake. my wife still has her 1987 rockhopper and it has a similar font. also is that a biopace? my 87 fisher came with a biopace.
