what is the pros and cons of a 1980 fj40 all factory other then 4 inch lift and 35 inch tires. whats good on this year whats bad?

Pros with my 81:
split case
factory power steering
factory disc brakes up front
gas tank under the tub in back and centered

cons:
smog gear
catalytic converters
3.70 gears (wish I had 4.11 stock)

HTH. I'm sure some others will chime in.

thanks! my cousin is looking at a 1980 fj and he was asking what i knew about that year. so what u are saying is the main difference is the 3.70 instead of 4.11 and the ambulance doors.
how much would u pay for this one?

1980 would have the 1 piece transfer case. looks like 35" tires are a bit tall for that amount of lift.

i paid 3800 for my 1980 fj40 it had a CRAP lift and 33 10s though...
a soft top and some pretty serious body "character"...
but that was b4 the banking system went to #$$%
i tried to sell my baby for a while b/c i was afraid of how i was going to pay for her... (yea i got a loan for my 40) but i LOVE her
i hope to fix up the hard top i bought (traded the soft top for a decent lift) get another 2"s under her and some 35s

in this economy i wouldnt pay more than 3k... yea you may be stealing it from the poor guy... but i mean.... dog eat dog.... its a rough time in the land of plenty....

1980 was a transition year. Early '80 would still have the one piece transfer and is identical to a '79. Late 1980 has the split case and is pretty much the same as an '81.

It's a 40...all I see are pros. But without seeing more pics (ie and body rot) I would have to say between $3500 - 4000. And yeah those tires are a bit big, so new tires once he makes the purchase or a SOA lift.

can't say much as to value without a peek under the hood and a look at the under carriage.
