I never thought I would do this but the time has come. After owning it a little over 10 years I have decided to sell my FJ40.

BODY & FRAME

This truck underwent a complete teardown and cosmetic rebuild about 8 years ago. The frame and axles were sandblasted, all rust from the body panels that aren't aluminum were sandblasted as well. I had plans of a V8 conversion at that time and welded plates to each side of the frame ahead of the crossmember for the rear mount. But I later changed my mind on that. The frame was sprayed inside and out after sandblasting and a skim coat of filler (just on the outside) with Eastwood rust encapsulator. Then it got a few coats of chassis black. Axles were painted with regular old dupont centari. The tub is a first generation Aqualu. It does not have the indentations for the doors or the lip for the hardtop. Which hasn't ever been an issue for me since I don't have a hardtop for it. It's got CCOT front fenders, a rust free hood from a 75, and a heritage windshield frame. The entire body was painted in pieces and it had a number of coats of epoxy primer before paint. I painted it 8 years ago and have had 1 small bubble probably 5mm in diameter pop up on the cowl. I'm not a body man and the paint has some flaws but it gets compliments all the time. I used to show the truck and won multiple awards with it. It's got old school Con-Ferr bumpers on it and these as well as the spare tire carrier were sprayed with Linex.

SUSPENSION & STUFF

2.5" Skyjacker springs with SOR extended length shackles and a CCOT leveling block. Pro Comp shocks and steering stabilizer. BTB Saginaw steering mounting plate and opposing plate for passenger side. All of the other Saginaw conversion components came from Downey. Steering box is from an 85 impala 3.5 turn I believe. Works great. Truck has stock brakes front and rear. 15x8 American Racing Python wheels with 33x12.50 BF Goodrich all terrains. Spare is an old All Terrain with a 15x8 white spoke.

DRIVETRAIN

Truck has 108k miles on it. It has the original 2F block and 3-4 years back it got a thorough rebuild. The block was bored .40 over, head was shaved .30 all new valve guides, crank was cut .10 under and the entire rotating assembly was balanced. Delta cams KC grind camshaft. And of course it got a new oil pump and all new bearings, pistons, rings, etc. during the rebuild. Toyota head gasket was used too. Stock 2F intake manifold with a JTO high rise Weber adapter and a 38/38 carb. Downey header and full custom 2-1/4" exhaust with a turbo muffler and a stainless tip. Mallory centrifugal advance distributor. New radiator and fan clutch within the last few years. Truck runs sweet and has a good deal more power than a stock 2F. Nice and smooth. Transmission is a stock untouched 4 speed hooked to the engine with a Sachs clutch. Transfer case was rebuilt about 6 years ago and has a JTO transfer case saver on the top. Back of the case had cracked at one time and it was tig welded before the rebuild. Axles are open diffs with stock 3.70 gears. With 33's it makes for a great highway cruiser. With the balanced engine and this tire/gear combo it will go just as fast as you are brave enough to go without complaint.

INTERIOR

Grant steering wheel, Auto Meter Tach and some mechanical sunpro gauges for oil pressure, temp, and volts. Stock ammeter has never worked and the stock oil pressure gauge is disconnected. But it does work. I just put the sender for the mechanical gauge in it's place. Has an old Kenwood CD player and 4 5-1/4" 2 way speakers on some homemade mounts. 8" bazooka tube behind the seat. All powered by an old 4 channel Kenwood amp under the passenger seat. Not exactly high-end but you can actually hear it going down the highway. CCOT seat belts and a Tuffy console. Pro Comp front super seats on stock tracks. 05 or 06 TJ fold and tumble rear seat. Cruiser Solutions carpet kit. I do have the original seats also. Kayline soft top and bikini top. Stock roll bar.

The truck is fine to drive anywhere right now but there are a few things that certainly could be addressed. The front knuckles could stand to be serviced. One side started leaking with the hubs locked earlier this year. A few years back one of the front calipers stuck and there is now a bit of a groove on the inside of the RF brake rotor. I was going to do that with the knuckles. The transfer case leaks out the e-brake drum. The brake still works fine. It doesn't leak bad and I don't think I've ever seen an FJ40 that didn't leak there. It's got a transfer hose between the tranny and transfercase. After the transfer case rebuild it went about a year then it started filling up the tranny again. So I put the transfer hose back on. It's also developed a minor oil leak I believe from the rear main seal. could be the back of the side cover though.

I want $15,000 for it. I had intended to keep this truck forever but I never drive it and could really use the cash and the garage space. Serious inquiries send me a PM and I will get in contact with you either by phone or email.

Thursday bump. I also might consider a partial trade if someone happened to have a REALLY clean pretty much stock 89-95 22RE, 5 speed, 4x4 extended cab pickup. If I can find one of those I might sell my Tacoma too.

I've decided to keep it. Selling the Tacoma instead and I'll pickup another older Toyota pickup for winter duty. Probably will put a plow on it and sell my 89 plow truck too.

Putting this out there again. Oddly enough my wife doesn't want me to sell it but I don't see myself driving it much in the future and I really miss the 05 double cab I sold last fall. If you happen to have an 05-08 Tacoma double cab (preferably a 6 speed) in good shape I might consider an even trade. Might consider a clean 84-89 4 cylinder 5 speed 4Runner as a partial trade too. No major projects though.

Had a long talk with my wife about it and this is going to have to be a cash sale only. I'll find a newer Tacoma later. Price is firm.

SOLD, headed to Michigan once the new owner decides on a shipper. Bittersweet really. I wish I didn't have to sell it but it's going to a good home. Ironically it now belongs to someone else and I got paid for it on my 40th birthday. When I bought it one idea/goal I had was to drive it cross country and go to Rubithon by the time I was 40. But life changes. I still want to make it to Rubithon someday. But I think my next buildup is going to be a 1st gen 4Runner. Much easier on the wallet to build and drive.
