Selling my 1979 FJ40. Near complete project. Been working towards completion for years, but I have made the tough choice to sell it to focus on my FZJ80. It is one of the cleaner late model Fj40's you'll find that is set up to wheel with the biggest and baddest while keeping everything that makes it "Land Cruiser-y." I wanted it to still be a complete FJ40 but go anywhere I wanted. It is complete with hard top and doors and still looks good, but isn't perfect so if you scratch it up you can shrug your shoulders and move on. Very little rust, all major rust has been dealt with. Details below:
The good:
140k smooth strong 2F with DUI ignition, Weber 38mm and headers. Plenty of power, no need for V8. WILL NOT PASS CA SMOG AS IS. I bought it out of state before I knew I'd be heading back to CA. I have some of the hard to find parts including the air cleaner and that little smog ECU.
SM465 granny gear transmission mated to 4 speed wide gear t case with Valley Hybrids case and nose cone savers. JUST REBUILD by a friend of mine who works at Advance Adapters, so you know it's good. Currently in a box on the front seat (I have a child, for those of you who know what I mean). Comes with Advance Adapters twin stick NIB. New parking brake stuff included.
Custom built Atlas Leaf Springs lengthened 3" in the front and 4" in the rear with old school shackle reversal and cantilever shackles. Icon Vehicle Dynamics 2.0's built specifically for this truck. The truck rides GREAT and will out flex a standard RTI ramp. Pictures of it flexing are from where we were working out the suspension, so yes, the old shocks are on there disconnected.
Custom driveshafts and DOT steel braided brake lines built to accommodate the wild flex you get from the suspension.
Disk brakes front and rear, stops like a champ
4.88 gears with ARB's front and rear.
35" tires (BFG's up front are getting old, but won't die so I've kept them! Older MTR's in the rear that are near perfecto)
Warn 8274 (seems to have a sticky solenoid)
Dual Optimas, one battery is pretty much toast, but it's there.
I sandblasted the ENTIRE interior of the tub and had it Line X'd, one of the single nicest jobs you'll ever see. All access panels were done separately so you can get to what you need. Line X continues over the lip of the tub so that you won't get the vibration from the top, very tight.
Hard top and doors in pretty good shape. Repainted awesome 70's baby puke brown/green some years ago. Looks groovy, I like it!
The not great but really not so bad:
Electrical is so/so. It was slated for a complete rewire this summer, but obviously plans are changing. I've been limping it along, everything works, but it would be a good idea.
Factory buckets have been hanging in but are pretty well thrashed, it's ready for replacements. Drivers seat was surprisingly comfy so I have been waiting to replace them with nice buckets, again on the list of things this summer.
Major rust has been dealt with, but has little superficial rust here and there, mainly trail wounds that weren't addressed before I bought it.
Has typical Land Cruiser leaks, nothing too bad.
Mini Truck power steering is adequate, but the pivot assembly only last a couple years at a time. I had plans to convert it over to saginaw or FJ60 steering, I'd put that on your list.
Exhaust needs to be redone. Was one of the last things to do.
Door seals are crap. Another finishing detail. Doesn't matter so much here in the So Cal sun.
That's about it….. I daily drove the truck until I had my daughter and loved every second of it. Being sooooo cloooose to having it complete makes it hard to sell, but the reality is that my FZJ80 is a better fit for me and my family. It'll still be on 37's and bad ass, so I should stop crying
If you're purchasing from out of state you're responsible for shipping, but if I put it back together I honestly wouldn't hesitate to plan on doing 60 miles per our across the country in it, it NEVER left me hanging in the dirt or on the street.
It was parked about 3 months ago while I had the case rebuilt. Currentlly the case is out of it. You pick it us AS IS for $12,500 and you'll score a good deal and save a couple thousand, but I'll soon be putting it back together for sale, price will go up. Title is good, registration is good. I'd love it to find a home with a 'mud member where it'll be well cared for. Please email me at Sales@atlassuspension.com for more pictures or details.
