I didn't show mounting the latch that mounts to the rear sill.

Lots of measuring .... and checking. Before I started putting more holes in my truck.

Plus nut on left and nut insert on right. Once again I went with the nut insert. You can see how they crush on that scrap piece.

Now... I can't Imagine why anyone would have a problem with mounting stuff to the body.

I'm mean heck, they did it from the factory....Right??

Sheewww, I'll have to count, but gosh that is a lot of holes!!

Thank you for the pics in post 370 of the front and back side of the plus nut and nut-sert side by side! That is exactly what I needed to see. The plus nut comes the closest to what I've been looking for. Years ago I was able to get a wall anchor that was almost like the plus nut and will hold to a thin sheet item, but have been unable to find them locally now.

No, it's not for my 40. At church we have a bunch of round, plastic tables that are slowly coming apart. The metal frame for the legs are held on from the factory with what looks like a wood screw into plastic sheet, and over time the screw is pulling out of the plastic sheet. I tried a nut-sert, unsuccessfully. They don't have a big enough lip around the diameter of the nut-sert, and will not hold in the plastic sheet. But, it looks to me like the plus nut has a big enough rim around the face, and expands enough around the back, to easily hold to the plastic sheet. The big question for me is how much interior space is needed for the plus nut before it is expanded. I have, as best as I can remember, just over an inch, maybe as much as an inch and one eighth.

All I need to do now is find a source for them, hopefully locally. Can you expand the plus nuts with just a bolt and a couple washers? It looks to me like it is possible, as I don't have anything mechanically to compress the plus nut.

By the way, I love your build, and have been following your thread, although I'm a few days behind currently.

The plus nuts are readily available. According to Nashville Bolt and Screw, where I got mine, they sell a lot to guys that have to rehang doors in a steel frames. Also, our mechanic at work, says he has always used them to mount stuff to the fiberglass fenders and bodies on big trucks.

Not sure what size bot your are wanting to use. That will depend on the depth of the plus nut.
I have: 8mm - 1 3/16 inch
6mm - 1 inch

The "proper tool" cost approx $135....egads!! Yes. That is how I crushed that one. I asked around if I could use a grade 8 or stronger nut/bolt to collapse it and they said it will work. Depending on how many you have to do, I would get a few extra grade 8 or better nuts and bolts. Be sure to get plenty of washers to keep from turning the plus nut.

Thanks!! The only thing that moves slower that a FJ40 restoration is tectonic plates

Here's a link to the tool I bought. I went through and studied up on a few of them and they range in price from $20 and up. This seemed like a sturdy middle of the road and was under $68 with Prime.
