Is there some kind of transition period between 78 and 79? My FJ40 has a Aug78 date on the body/door plate. Ordering some rear wheel cover brackets the other day and mine don't look like "78 and older", they look like the "79 and newer"?

Then there's the 1979 Toyota brochure, which has an FJ40 with the older style bezel on the cover (see attachment)? I thought 79 was a distinctly new model, newer rectangle/rounded corners bezel, fuel tank outside and down under, etc.?

Are there features that kind of overlap the 78 - 79 period?

(And does anyone know why there are no hubs on that brochure cover truck?)

I know 78 is a year that produce 1978 model year trucks from Nov.77 to Dec. 78.

I have a nov. 77 and a dec. 78, both a close to each other, but also different.

The front bib/bezel change was in 1/79 and due federal law I believe for wider spaced headlights and probably date specific.

As for the lockouts, I think were a dealer option.

78 gas tank is inside the cab, round bezel, small bolt pattern on the knuckles, 76-78 outer birfs are different, e brake handle is mounted under the dash

79 has the gas tank under the rig, square bezel, block will be drilled and tapped for the PS mount, larger bolt pattern on the knuckles, outer birfs are the same 79-90, ebrake handle is mounted on the trans hump

I looked at an advertised 79 local a few years ago, and it was a 78 titled as a 79

Lots of cross overs from 78 to 79. One of the pigs with a May 78 build date has a 79 wiring harness (6-prong voltage regulator) while the other pig Dec 77 build date has the 3-pin voltage regulator. Looks like they ran through their 78 wiring harnesses and started using 79's

Also 78's don't have catalytic converters where 79's do.
