I am considering selling my 1978 FJ40. I have owned this cruiser since 2001. I am considering selling it only because we need a larger vehicle for camping. I would consider trade for a locked FZJ80 or 2nd Gen 4Runner. Here is a list of what I have done since I have owned it:

05/2002 Tube Bumper (front)
06/2002 Re-skinned rear quarters with electro-galvanized 16 ga. steel.
06/2002 Rear Disc Brake Conversion (Monte Carlo calipers, have Willwood valve not installed)
06/2002 Black Steel Wheels BFG All-Terrains 35X12.50X15

09/2004 Leather seats from Olds Bravada

12/2005 Shackle Reversal using Proffitt's kit.
12/2005 Spring Over Axle using a cut/turn axle housing from Proffitts, stock springs, FJ60 knuckles and birfields (larger and stronger than stock '78 knuckles).
12/2005 Knuckles rebuilt on re-assembly
12/2005 Marlin Crawler Hy-Steer
12/2005 Warn Hubs
12/2005 Replaced disk brake pads all around

Following work performed by Proffitt's Cruisers

01/2006 Chevy 400 V8 conversion (Q-jet Carb)
01/2006 Ceramic Headers
01/2006 Aluminum Radiator
01/2006 Dual electric fans
01/2006 SM465 (rebuilt) with Woody's adapter plate mounted to stock 4 speed x-fer case
01/2006 Saginaw Power Steering
01/2006 Dual Cardon rear drive shaft
01/2006 Anti-wrap traction bar
01/2006 Bilstein 5125 Shocks installed front and rear
01/2006 Stainless Exhaust

07/2006 Painted with military surplus drab green.
09/2006 TigerTop Soft Top

I have Hard Top, Hard Doors, Soft Top, Soft Doors (Specter), and Bikini Top.

The valve covers and the pan leak some oil, I add a quart about every 1000 miles. I have been hesitant to sell this because I don't feel it is complete, but when are cruisers ever complete? It leaves stuff for someone else to do with the body and roll cage. if you haven't driven a cruiser with a V8 and power steering it is a pleasant upgrade. I am thinking $5,800 OBO or trade for a locked FZJ80 or 2nd Gen 4Runner.

170 views but no replys, I would love some feedback! Anything regarding asking price, mods, location would be great to know what y'all think.

TIA

We are all voyeurs here at Mud, thus the views with no posts.

Price of fuel has significantly dropped the 4wd market, even for a nice looking rig like yours. I'll trade ya my 60 & accessories for it...

Shots of hard top & rear of rig?

I am new to cruisers, but I have looked at a ton over the past year, so all I can comment on is your price, and I think its a good deal. Most of the ones I looked at with all the mods you have done would be several grand more, but with the economy things have gone down. I still think its a good deal, good luck! :)

seems like a great deal, actually. Nice rig.

I agree, more than a fair price for so many upgrades.

FWIW I am in the market for a 40, well actually the wife is. The biggest problem I see with your 40 for me is location as I am in SC.

The market is tight right now considering the economy and gas prices. I would post up some more pics including interior shots and pics of any problem areas to include rust (passenger door sill, passenger front fender, etc).

Be patient - it will sell.

I think it a very fair asking price. Just no money these days. Good luck but should sell.

I would consider a trade. Unfortunately we could not get much further away from each other. Seems like a good price for the work done. Good luck with the sale.

Thanks for all the responses. I am now considering keeping it and throwing a tbi 350 in it. Then I will have to make all kinds of storage stuff for it so we could take all of our camping stuff with us.

Doesn't exactly fit the family campoing machine, but if I needed a trail rig that is the one for damn sure! Nice builld, I'm going to have to forward that to my brother-in-law. He just did a lot of the same work but doesn't like how top heavy the 60 is. He's been talking about cutting the top.

I just listed my 80 series for sale on Mud. It is listed under:

95 80 series for sale, Old Man Emu, ARB, TJM, Conferr.

I have included some pics, but the ad has most of the details about the rig. I am asking a bit more for mine, but would be very interested in a closer trade.

If you are interested, feel free to call me at 970-640-3603. Thanks, John

Sold to the cute little girl in the red shirt! Well her daddy bought it but I'm sure she'll roll it. Gappy, I hope you love your new rig! Can't believe it's really going to Indiana.

Now to find me an FZJ80...
