I am considering selling my 1978 FJ40. I have owned this cruiser since 2001. I am considering selling it only because we need a larger vehicle for camping. I would consider trade for a locked FZJ80 or 2nd Gen 4Runner. Here is a list of what I have done since I have owned it:
05/2002 Tube Bumper (front)
06/2002 Re-skinned rear quarters with electro-galvanized 16 ga. steel.
06/2002 Rear Disc Brake Conversion (Monte Carlo calipers, have Willwood valve not installed)
06/2002 Black Steel Wheels BFG All-Terrains 35X12.50X15
09/2004 Leather seats from Olds Bravada
12/2005 Shackle Reversal using Proffitt's kit.
12/2005 Spring Over Axle using a cut/turn axle housing from Proffitts, stock springs, FJ60 knuckles and birfields (larger and stronger than stock '78 knuckles).
12/2005 Knuckles rebuilt on re-assembly
12/2005 Marlin Crawler Hy-Steer
12/2005 Warn Hubs
12/2005 Replaced disk brake pads all around
Following work performed by Proffitt's Cruisers
01/2006 Chevy 400 V8 conversion (Q-jet Carb)
01/2006 Ceramic Headers
01/2006 Aluminum Radiator
01/2006 Dual electric fans
01/2006 SM465 (rebuilt) with Woody's adapter plate mounted to stock 4 speed x-fer case
01/2006 Saginaw Power Steering
01/2006 Dual Cardon rear drive shaft
01/2006 Anti-wrap traction bar
01/2006 Bilstein 5125 Shocks installed front and rear
01/2006 Stainless Exhaust
07/2006 Painted with military surplus drab green.
09/2006 TigerTop Soft Top
I have Hard Top, Hard Doors, Soft Top, Soft Doors (Specter), and Bikini Top.
The valve covers and the pan leak some oil, I add a quart about every 1000 miles. I have been hesitant to sell this because I don't feel it is complete, but when are cruisers ever complete? It leaves stuff for someone else to do with the body and roll cage. if you haven't driven a cruiser with a V8 and power steering it is a pleasant upgrade. I am thinking $5,800 OBO or trade for a locked FZJ80 or 2nd Gen 4Runner.
