Howdy! I am re-posting this article and updating with the changes as I have been away over the winter..

My 78 BJ40 (B motor) has a lot of white exhaust smoke since partially rebuilding: head inspect and rebuilt by machine shop, replaced head gasket and cleaned engine block up. The exhaust smoke is worse at idle and it is idling very high. The smoke clears some when I drive it (see video) and it has a fuel kill knob on dash that if I partially pull it out, helps some too.

The video shows how the smoke decreases as I accelerate through first gear, returns when I engage the clutch and then dissipates again when I accelerate through 2nd gear. Smoke has no sweet smell and oil levels have remained constant. The engine noise also seems to normalize while accelerating in gear. These changes in exhaust smoke and engine noise do not change if it is in neutral and I rev the engine some though.

It also has some difficulty starting, usually has to be turned over a fair amount before firing up, I thought this was due to starting after rebuilding but it has persisted each time I have started. It has subtle backfires occasionally too I noticed while watching the exhaust smoke the other day too.

I replaced the diaphragm on the fuel pump, following the guide I found on his website and another I found here: Replacing the 3B Fuel Air Diaphragm but this hasn't changed anything, its still spitting a ton of smoke and idling high.

Attached are videos showing the smoke when driving the first time:

And the exhaust smoke just running:

Also some photos of the Injector pump/throttle and the timing mark:

I’ll answer any other questions as best I can and will post any photos that can help figure this issue out!

Thanks in advance!

I just read an article where the British are dumping the diesels, evidently a study showed more dieing from air pollution since everything went diesel in the UK, evidently now diesel cars have poo poo resale value- - -just saying.

This is a tough post since Mud people are having a love affair with diesel swaps???

I love that diesel, it seems to have more power than the F model I had when I was younger, 34" tires it just man handles... hopefully can figure the exhaust out soon, thanks for the response!

So the error has been found and corrected, wanted to say thank you to Gerg for all his help and identifying the easily overlooked mistake that had occurred.

The previous owner (dealer in this case) had swapped the lines that go to the throttle so the throttle was wide open when idling causing the symptoms seen. I wouldnt have guessed this but it makes sense based on replacing the diaphragm and the issues of a leaky diaphragm persisting, hope this helps someone in the future.
